Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Tomlin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mindy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got my cosplay start back in 2012. I had just started a job in East Texas, and one of my co-workers said that I was the nerdiest person she’d ever met that had never been to a comic book or anime convention! With a little encouragement, I prepared my first two costumes: Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony and Korra from the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. I managed to finish both for my very first con: A-Kon 2012!
I was hooked on cosplay after that event, so I ran out to my local Wal-Mart, bought a super cheap sewing machine, and dove headfirst into learning everything I could. At that point, I had never touched a sewing machine in my life or done much in terms of artistic hobbies, so I also turned to my stepmother for tutelage. She showed me how to read a sewing pattern, find materials, and gave me a general overview of the basics. From there, I did a lot of experimenting, research, and deep dives into online tutorials.
After a few years, I started competing in costume contests, which led to commission inquiries, the first one coming in late 2014. I took all sorts of commissions over the next few years while trying to balance my 9-5 life. After joining my local cosplay group, Cosmic Coterie, I found my niche: Sailor Moon dresses! Since 2016, I’ve made almost 100 Sailor Moon commissions.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest hurdles I’ve faced with commissions over the years is how to balance them with my 9-5 job, plus finding time to make my own builds and keep a handle on life. I’ve burned myself out many times over the years, but I love the creative side of my work, which keeps me coming back to it. Specializing in Sailor Moon costumes has helped me balance my commission workflow with my full-time job and life.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a freelance costume commissioner primarily specializing in Sailor Moon costumes, which are made using my team’s (Cosmic Coterie) patterns and tutorials. I’m pleased to offer my services to clients of all sizes. I firmly believe that any person can cosplay any character they want, and I’m happy to help people embody their favorite characters.
My costumes are best known for their comfort, attention to detail, and high quality craftsmanship.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m passionate about creating costumes and committed to making every commission a great experience. A large portion of my business comes from repeat clients or referrals from clients.
