Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Scott.
Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I used to be a school teacher and ran my vintage business on the side for fun. I had been patiently waiting for a store front on the McKinney Square to come available when I spied the for lease sign in the window of what is now The Groovy Coop. We remodeled the building during the summer of 2015 and opened that August. The rest is history!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It actually has not been too rough for us. We are fortunate to be very unique in comparison to what you might normally find in my neck of the woods. We also have a lovely and historic downtown to call home and supportive peers.
Please tell us about Miss Henny Penny’s Groovy Coop.
The Groovy Coop mixes traditional vintage with pops of funk. Think of a small, groovy department store. That’s us! We have a record section (both vintage and new pressings), rock and quirky tees, socks for everyone, irreverent gifts for all ages, and LOTS of vintage goods. We are the only record store in our area so we have a solid repeat customer base there. I am most proud of the individuality and broad demographic we represent. I think it’s so important to be yourself and embrace what makes you different from the rest. I feel we represent that well.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t know that I would change too much! I feel that life organically moves in the direction it is supposed to so even though we’ve had a few rough patches, it’s all part of the process. I wouldn’t know what I do today if it wasn’t for yesterday.
