Today we’d like to introduce you to Mita Shah Bhagat and Anita Amit.
So, before we jump into specific questions about your organization, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We are both residents of Frisco and met through a common friend who leads community efforts in healthy lifestyles. Very early on we realized that we had shared interests. We felt the need to bring awareness of healthy, sustainable food choices through plant-based eating in our community. We founded Green and Fit Frisco as a local chapter of Plant Pure Pod – a grassroots movement to build stronger, healthier, and more sustainable communities. It is a 501-c organization founded by Nelson Campbell (son of Dr. T Collin Campbell). We are both extremely passionate about living a happy, healthful and compassionate life. We see more and more people getting interested in this lifestyle to not only prevent but in many cases, reverse disease.
There is a lot of information out there on the topic but to most people, it can be confusing, intimidating, and difficult to separate fact from fiction. We took it upon ourselves to raise awareness and share evidence-based information with tips on ways to adopt it. Our goal is to help keep everyone and their loved ones healthier and happier, help the environment AND save innocent lives!
Our intent is to host monthly events that cover all these aspects and try and get the community involved as much as possible! For example, potlucks, informative talks, outdoor yoga, meditation or fitness classes as the weather improves, support from our plant-based doctors, guidance on other environmentally friendly lifestyle choices like composting, reducing waste etc. We are thankful to have the support of organizations like the Plant Pure Community to build awareness and support. We are all pumped up about taking small steps toward ending speciesism and living greener fitter lives!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We started our Facebook page in November 2019 and have been growing since. We had our first event in February, which was very successful and had a few more events planned for the next few months. Because of the pandemic Covid19, we had to cancel them. We still keep our online community engaged with evidence-based articles, recipes, online events etc. Despite the hiccup of losing our ability to have facetime and social connections due to the pandemic, we are proudly a group of 157 members today!
So yes, quite a smooth ride considering how young we are. Far from a struggle, but the only challenge (if we can call it that) is balancing these passions with family and full-time jobs. Someday, though, we hope to pursue this life mission in a more full-time manner, resulting in a greater impact on community wellbeing.
Please tell us about Green & Fit Frisco.
We are a volunteer organization, who aims to support others in living a healthy, stress-free, earth-friendly life. We promote whole food plant-based nutrition and living in harmony with our environment and other cohabitants on earth. People who pursue this kind of lifestyle often feel isolated. They may not even have the support from their family members. This community provides them the support they are missing.
For those who have always been curious to learn about plant based lifestyle, be it for any reason, this is a great place to find more information. Both of us were able to transition to plant-based lifestyle because we had support from Plant Pure pods and like-minded people.
We are proud to be supporting a causing that is a win-win all around; improves the quality of our health, encourages choices and habits that contribute in reducing and reversing the horrific climate change challenges we face as a global community and last but certainly not the least, respects and appreciates all life on earth, however small it may be. It is also very gratifying and humbling.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Passion and belief in your cause and vision automatically lead to hard work, honest interactions and a strong work ethic. These to us, are the foundation and catalysts to success.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
So far, we have been very fortunate to connect with the right people and have great support from our community. We are very grateful for the same and excited to pay it forward. Our outlook aligns with the Seven Generation principle adopted by Native Americans, according to which, our actions today will have an impact on our current health and that of the next seven generations. We need to do our part to preserve the wellbeing of our offsprings and the natural environment in which they will live.
