Meet Mitchell Deskis of Momentum Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitchell Deskis.

Mitchell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My father, who has always been in the gym ever since I can remember, had powerlifting in his earlier years and made a come back at 50 years young in 2009. In 2010, he asked me if I wanted to prep for a meet in 8 months and with nothing else going on I accepted the challenge.

The months ahead were paved with rigorous 2-hour training sessions, blood, sweat, tears, pain, and lots of ibuprofen and a heating pad. But the greatest thing that came from those months of training wasn’t the strength increases, but the confidence I began to have for myself. I realized if I could push myself in the gym, I could do this in other aspects of my life too. Come meet day, I weighed in at 158lbs and squatted 420lbs, benched 265lbs and deadlifted 523lbs (which was a world record). Now, I won’t say these are typical results for someone who trains for 8 months because not everyone has the grit, tenacity, and determination to put 100% effort in. This was the beginning of where everything started…

Friends began to ask me what I did to not only increase my lifts but what changed my body composition so drastically. They told me I should become a trainer, even though the thought never came into my mind. I was extremely lost in life and had no direction, but it wasn’t until I found the gym that I FINALLY had direction in something. I felt like I was finally great and could create an impact that I know I was destined to do. After months of contemplation, I became a certified PT and instead of going the corporate route, I went to a PT studio to build up my own clientele.

It’s in this journey that made me realize what it was like to own your own business. The gym didn’t give me any clients so it was up to me to go out and find prospects to train. For the first month… the first month! I trained a group of ladies for FREE for a month to provide them great results and in exchange I wanted referrals. Imagine, you’re new in your business and you work for an entire month for free, and in the meantime, you’re training them as if they’re paying you top dollar. I realized early on that if I could give my clients so much attention and results no matter what they paid, I would have an amazing experience which is exactly what people buy when it comes to training. They obviously want the results, but if you don’t put on a show and make it fun, then it’s easy to drop off and lose motivation.

After training at this facility for 3 years, my good friend and I decided we wanted to open up our own PT studio and give other trainers the opportunity to build their businesses. We were also tired of how our gym was being run and knew we could do it in a much bigger way. Our first step was creating a business plan, which we finished in one night, drinking tons of coffee and staying up until 3 am. What we did next was set up 2 meetings with potential investors. One of them couldn’t make the meeting, so we met with the other investor. It was meant to be because after meeting just one time, this particular person wanted to invest right away. He saw the drive and passion from my partner and I. This was also the moment I realized we could sell almost anything…

Essentially, I give all of the credit to the work ethic I had received from working out. The amount of discipline you need to have can be put into other aspects of your life. This is exactly what I did and continue to do every single day.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
NO WAY! I have encountered so many struggles it’s insane. From losing clients to almost losing my apartment, not being able to pay my car note, struggling to pay for groceries, the list goes on and on.

The biggest struggles have always been mental ones. If we cannot conquer what is inside our heads, we will never conquer anything on the outside.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Momentum Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
Our business Momentum Fitness specializes in individualized, semi-private, group training sessions, and yoga in an upscale training atmosphere. We want our clients’ first impressions to be “WOW” when they walk into our facility.

We are known for our customer service. We provide an unbeatable service due to the fact that every single person who walks into our facility is greeted by their first name. What other gyms do this?

I am most proud of the fact that we truly do care about not only our clientele but our staff as well. Without all of these individuals, our facility would not run as smoothly as it does.

What sets us apart from the others is we do not sell training… we sell results. When you come into our gym, understand you’re working with the top professionals around the DFW area. No matter the journey, we will always deliver our promise of giving you results that will LAST.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. All I believe in is catching a “lucky” break when the person is consistent and open to opportunity.
