Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Macias.
Hi Monica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Everything started around November 2019, just before the pandemic. I was talking to my mum over the phone and told her that there was a group of entrepreneurial Mexican women and that they would sell a lot of goodies and she was asking and pushing me to tell a friend of mine (a beekeeper) to bring honey to sell as she was coming to spend Thanksgiving with me and my husband. And just to stop having my mum pushing/reminding me about this every so often, I took the first step and ask my friend for the honey. I was so nervous about this since it was about 10 years since I was on my last job (not counting being a full-time mum of 2). It all started with a few honey jars, and I initially offered the honey to our friends, and from there, it was the word of mouth that pushed me to start going to events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest hurdle I had to tackle was the pandemic, and I can say that after the pandemic, one of my struggles is the ability to speak fluently in English. Another struggle was to start working again after 10 years. Fortunately for me, I have a great backup (my husband) to help me on getting past this hurdle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
What I mostly do is a network and go to popup events. I’m most proud of it that because of this entrepreneurship, we have become closer as a family. The thing that sets me apart from others is the taste of our honey and the variety we offer.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
First and foremost, the best advice I can give is to be patient and to persevere; also, don’t let fear stop you.
