Meet Monica Shearer of Creative Cakes by Monica in Azle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Shearer.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Thirty-three years ago, my mother and father got the wild idea to start a wedding catering business. My mother was in employee management and my father was an aircraft engineer at the time. After doing weddings for her three daughters, she thought it would be a good business when they retired. Of course, the whole family got hired every weekend, whether we liked it or not, to help run the business of catering wedding events.

My training was in floral and cakes, my sisters in setting up and helping with the food prep. Even our children, in later years, got to work for the grandparents! Well after 17 long years, they did both retire completely, and sadly are no longer with us. I had such a large customer base doing cakes, and such a large inventory of equipment, I decided to keep doing it on the side, and working a full-time job. It put two girls through college, and paid for both weddings, so I kept with it. When the company I had worked for 10 years closed their doors, I was determined to start doing cakes full time.

I worked from home for 6 months and when the seams on my house burst with supplies, equipment, and cakes, my husband urged me to find a place to call my own. I rented a spot in my local strip mall, and the rest is history! I am on my 8th year in business full time, and my 33rd year total. I am moving into a larger space at the first of the year, so hopefully, I will continue to grow for a few more!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, nothing is without struggles. Some years were a little light due to the economy, but we kept the product great, and our customers stayed loyal. Our little town of Azle is growing by leaps and bounds now, so it is looking good in the coming years.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Creative Cakes by Monica story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a custom cake company. We specialize in wedding and birthday cakes, but we also have a storefront where we sell cupcakes and cake balls daily. I think we are most known for our wedding cakes, and are listed as a preferred vendor with dozens of wedding venues around our area, as well as Fort Worth/Dallas. We travel up to 3 hours away for deliveries, which is almost unheard of for other cake companies. We have, without a doubt, the best buttercream ever! My secret recipe! And our coffee butter fudge icing is to die for!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, bad luck got me here, and good luck is keeping me here.
