Today we’d like to introduce you to Monzerrat Oranday and Sergio Cantu.
Monzerrat and Sergio, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My husband and I were born in Monterrey, Mexico. He came to live in the United States at age of seven, together with his parents. Years later, he returned to Monterrey for College and there we met. We were in a relationship for five years and then we got married. We decided to live in the United States, so I left Mexico. During the process of waiting for my green card, I was brainstorming what to do with all the time that I would not be able to work and my lifetime dream has been always to have my own business. So, I decided to start planning a business and research everything I needed to start a business and, when I could work, start as soon as possible. In our wedding, we had an elote cart for our guests as an after party snack and we realized that people loved it. Back in Dallas, I remembered that moment and want to recreate the idea of elotes in all kind of events because it had created a good experience and happiness for my guests. My husband, Sergio Cantu, and I start working together to make our dream come true. We want to offer our customers and their guests a new experience in every event/party.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been easy for many reasons. The first one was that I really didn’t know my market because I was living in another country with other customs and other interests. In Mexico they love to have elote in their events, but we didn’t know if in Dallas they would be interested. Another obstacle we face was that this concept (Elote cart or Elote Bar in any event) was new to almost all the people in here, so we have to start attracting customers and let them see that it was something cool for their events and that they are going to make every guests to feel special with our Monchy’s Elote because it´s custom made.
Monchy’s Snacks – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our business aims to create a new experience to our customers and their guests in their events or parties through a popular snack: Elote. We want the guests to feel special and that the hosts of the events feel satisfied that they treat their guests. We are very proud of our work so far because when we left every event, we always received good feedback of our service and our concept.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There’s no only one moment we feel proud, as we said, we felt proud after every event when we see that people love our service, our product and they came to congratulate us for what we created.
