Meet Morgan Lucas of Agape Psych Services in North Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Lucas.

Morgan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began working in the mental health field in 2002. The rollercoaster ride that is private practice began in 2012. I was encouraged to take the plunge by my spouse, and co-founder, Dr. James Manuel. I graduated with my doctorate in 2008 and I had only vaguely considered to the ability to work so freely. Prior to working for myself, I had leadership roles in college counseling, correctional, and disordered eating facilities. It has been rewarding to create a working environment that I believe in. I am happy that this journey started sooner than later.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Learning to navigate within the world of business was a challenge. From incorporation to hiring, to franchise taxes, I was definitely surprised by the hurdles that stood in the way of building a successful practice. I prefer to focus most on client care. Marketing progressed smoothly, but I am happy to relay on CPAs and other business professionals for technical issues.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our practice is committed to serving the community in an inclusive manner. Agape represents unconditional love, not limited by any one religion. We work with a diverse population and we partner with therapists who share in our values. We take insurance and offer affordable rates so that clients can focus on healing versus financial stress. I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, but I am generalist trained so I treat an array of clinical concerns. I enjoy women’s wellness, LGBT concerns, and relationship issues.

I’m most proud of the word of mouth reputation we have. Getting new client referrals from current and former clients is validating. I think our practice is special in an intangible way. We have a familial vibe that seems to resonate with our clients. We have seen clients tackle difficult issues and grow into strong individuals and clients have seen James and I grow from a family of three to a family of five!

What were you like growing up?
I have always been skeptical, persistent, outspoken, and loving. Those traits have served me well in personal and professional endeavors. I have a love for music, nature, and being helpful in an empowering, not enabling, way.
