Today we’d like to introduce you to Mustafa Shabak.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Mike’s Tire first originated many years ago in 1993 in Dallas, TX. As a family owned business, our goal was simply to provide affordable tires with the upmost greatest customer service. The original founder, my father Mike, destined to help lower income customers with tires that wouldn’t break the bank. Mike decided to open a tire shop that provided new and used tires that people could actually afford. The used tire industry began to boom as people realized that they could buy tires as low as $30!
The expansion of another shop in Lewisville began in 2008 where Mike decided to build the family business even further. After attending the University of Texas at Austin, I began working for a law firm to essentially get my foot into the door. I was managing my dad’s shop on and off during my time in school and even a few days after I graduated. As I saw the potential for the business to grow I decided to leave the firm to work full time at Mike’s Tire.
After a solid four years into the business learning the ins and out of running the shop, I saved up enough money to buy the business out from my father, leaving me as the sole business owner. I have learned the tire business from working on the floor to overseeing management. My time and experience finally paid off as I am now an owner of a profound small business at the age of 28. I plan to run this shop as best as I can until I can potentially open up more shops in the future.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road is far from my story as I have worked long hard hours to achieve my goal to be a business owner. There have been times where I was relied on to provide labor and manage the entire shop with only the help of one other. As the month of Ramadan approaches every year I am not only fasting during work hours, but I am working in the scorching heat giving my best to complete the next sale.
Graduating college did not teach me to be a business owner and most of my experience has come from working on the floor here at the shop. There have been certain obstacles that I thought I could never overcome, but with confidence I managed to face all my fears. I am now determined to solve any problem as efficiently and effectively as I can.
