Meet Myaann Payne of MYN Image

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myaann Payne.

Myaann, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The first fashion picture I ever took was when I was 3. I would put on my mom’s sunglasses upside down, wear her shirts like evening gowns, and parade around the house with my dolls in tow. Fast forward to 2001 to my job working for a couture designer in LA… I quickly realized that I do indeed have a knack for steaming clothes, quickly pinning, and getting paper thin models dressed and undressed in 1.5 minutes. Kidding. Working runway shows wore me down! I got a taste of editorial styling there, and I fell in love with the artistic concept of that. Fast forward again to 2009 when I was packing my life in Mexico to come back to the states after the dreadful 2008 economy dip. I wanted to get back into something that I truly loved, something I truly enjoyed and of course it was in fashion…retail this time with goals of advancing it into a career. I had worked at boutiques and helped with buying and merchandising, but now I really craved customer interaction. Helping others is something I’m drawn to do. After 5 years in retail management, I realized that my destiny was to work with clients one on one and help them not just with their clothing but with their confidence, self-esteem, and their overall image.

2013 was a big year – I quit my quickly-becoming-corporate’ish retail management job and set out on my own. I hit some bumps in the road but I’m passionate about my craft and I kept going.

Today I now consider myself to be a personal brand expert. I help take my clients to the next level in their careers, in their business, and in their lives by pulling their personal brand together. That comes by way of closet rehabs, personal shopping, and outfit creation/style sessions. I also started a subscription box company in 2015 and I get to fill my personal shopper desires on a monthly basis and send my subscribers a box of goodness!

To find your purpose in life and to be able to follow your dream is one of a kind.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I will say around 40% to half of my road thus far has been smooth. I’ve most certainly been off roading a bit, the road turned to gravel, then dirt, then mud…but it does curve around and become once again the smooth road in luxury car commercials.

My biggest struggles right now are:

1. Myself. Nothing is ever good enough; I’m the quintessential perfectionist. I’ll never wing it and I always want it done right the first time. I also used to set completely unrealistic goals for the steps I was in in my business. It is really detrimental. I’m working through this!

2. Finding my ideal client…that’s a “right place, right time” recipe that I haven’t yet mastered.

Other than that, the challenges of owning your own business I believe are about the same:

Finding the right supplier for your needs, dealing with flakey people, marketing strategies that must be tested and fail until you find the right one, and well, brand alignment.

What sets me apart is the fact that I’m pretty no nonsense, but in a kind way. I’ve got a vocab of replacement words so I’m never telling my client their clothes are horrid. You can say anything if you word it right!

MYN Style Box’s mission is to deliver the custom luxury service of a personal shopper at an affordable price for people that are looking to step up their style by having a team of personal stylists shop individually on a recurring basis.

I’m known for being able to dress someone sight unseen, with just their measurements and from reading their intake form. I’ve got a wealth of knowledge with fabrics, cut and construction, fit, and brands and my subscribers know it. What sets MYN Style Box apart from the rest is that I actually shop for every single client individually based on what their needs/wants/upcoming travel plans are.

I am most proud of the client base that I’ve built. Looking back to day 1 to now is such a huge transformation for my long-standing clients! It makes my soul happy to be able to help them get dressed for their lives while showing off who they are and expressing themselves. I love that my clients have gotten jobs, raises, and more clients because they feel amazing in the outfits I’ve put together for them. I’m so so proud of my ace, Adriana. She’s so much more than an assistant. She literally keeps the ship sailing, she’s grown so much in the years we’ve worked together, and I’m so proud of her and looking forward to building this company more and adding more great people and services!

What were you like growing up?
Oh boy. Growing up as 1 of 4 bi-racial children in my school I was judged, bullied, timid, scared, and only outgoing with my Motley Crew of friends. I was odd (ok, maybe I’m still a slight bit odd), always trying to be who I thought I was supposed to be, for whomever was popular or cool at the time. I spent most of my adolescence trying to fit in. Now I’m the complete opposite.

I wanted to be so many things growing up: a runway model always, a paleontologist, child psychologist, an Olympic track athlete…

Come to think of it, I still would like to grace another runway or two before I’m done in this life!
