Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykel Hilliard.
Hi Mykel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
From the time I could move and make decisions on my own I was always ready to create art (writing, drawing, etc.) and performing for others. Through the years I lost touch with my artistic side and was working and going to school but the pandemic gave me a second chance to lean into my creative side. Since 2020 I have been able to use my skills for major companies such as USA Today and Snapchat.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was rough for me… I lived an up and down childhood with addiction plaguing my family and family members… on the flip side of that my biggest struggle was accepting my queerness and living in my truth. For years I lived in fear of being my true authentic self and because of that, I struggled with my mental health and how I showed up for the world.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating colorful conceptual art based on my life experiences and pop culture for Instagram and social media.
I am probably most known for my appearance on the Snapchat Originals show “Reunited” as well as my journalism work for publications in Texas and DFW.
I am proud of all of my creative work however I believe I most proud of my journalism work because I have gotten to tell the stories of a lot of BIPOC who may have otherwise not had a chance to have their story told.
What sets me apart from others is the same thing that I believe sets us all apart from each other – our stories. We all have different life experiences that got us to where we are mentally and spiritually and I believe what I have gone through has made my art better and stronger.
