Meet Dr. Myron Jones of New Outlook Counseling and Wellness Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Myron Jones.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It’s such a long story but I’ll attempt to be brief. Back in 2000, I was attending the University of Texas at Arlington as a business major but ultimately, I dropped out because my wife and I were having marital issues. Soon after, my wife walked out on me and left me with four girls to raise on my own. Shortly thereafter, I lost my job and then my home. As a result, I fell into a mild depression and all I had was my faith in God to lift me out the funk that I found myself in. Three months after losing a job, whereby I was making $10.81 an hour, God blessed me with a job on a Department of Homeland Security contract making $20 an hour and a year later He blessed me with a brand new 2700sqft home in Rockwall, TX a suburb of Dallas.

In 2006, I transferred from the University of Texas at Arlington to Texas A&M University-Commerce where I changed my major from business to Criminal Justice. I had just graduated from the police academy at Eastfield College so it only made sense to change my major. I transferred 100 hours but because I changed my major, I had to do another 50 hours in my new major which I completed in a year and a half going to three different schools. I ultimately graduated in December of 2007 with my BS in Criminal Justice. I then started my Master’s program in January 2008 with a concentration in Community Counseling. In that same year, I remarried a woman who had two children from a previous marriage, and we began our lives as a blended family with six children.

I graduated with my Master’s degree in December 2010 and shortly thereafter, began pursuing my Doctorate degree in August of 2011. I gained full licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in December of 2012 and opened my first office a couple of weeks later. Being in business for myself was a learning process and there were times I wanted to throw in the towel, but ultimately, I stuck it out. Two and a half years after pursuing my Doctorate, I graduated in December 2014. I graduated with three degrees from the same university in eight years all while working weekends overnight as a contract security officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It has been a long road filled with both mountain top rejoicing and valley low lamenting, but all in all, I wouldn’t change anything that I experienced or went through during that time because it all worked out for my good.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was the furthest thing from a smooth road. I experienced being a single father of four girls, divorce, unemployment, losing my home, etc. There were times that I had fleeting thoughts of harming myself but knew I had to figure things out for the sake of my children. I was broken, and at times felt helpless, but I never lost my faith in God. Through it all, God sustained me and He ultimately changed things for the better. I remarried and experienced hurt and pain in that relationship as well. There were times, I thought about leaving and I’m sure she may have felt the same but through the grace of God, we made it through. We experienced behavioral issues in our children because they were hurting from the divorces and the lack of support and involvement from their other biological parent. I was overwhelmed with trying to juggle a family that included a new baby that took our child count to seven. In addition, I was going to school fulltime, working a fulltime job with the government, and all while trying to build my counseling practice. So, was it a smooth road? No, not at all, but anything worth having in life is worth fighting for. I often tell people that I come in contact with that adversity was never meant to take you out, it was meant to take you up.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the New Outlook Counseling and Wellness Center story. Tell us more about it.
New Outlook Counseling and Wellness Center is my baby and Im as proud and as protective of it, as I am my family. New Outlook started as a walk of faith and through it all, God has been faithful in growing and sustaining it. New Outlook Counseling and Wellness Center is a comprehensive counseling center that focuses on healing the mind as well as the body. We provide mental health counseling services for couples, families, and individuals. In addition, we provide psychological assessments for substance abuse, ADHD, and personality disorders. New Outlook is known for taking a personal approach in providing both Christian and clinical counseling to its clients. We promote building trusting and long-lasting relationships with our clients and it’s something that we truly take pride in.

As a company, we believe in and promote building strong, well-adjusted individuals. I believe in every person that walks through my doors, but the challenge is getting those same people to believe in themselves. At New Outlook, we don’t judge, but rather we love and meet people where they are, in an effort to restore in them whatever it is that they’ve lost. I love the human aspect of New Outlook. It’s not about money, to be honest, there are times that we offer our services to people we know can’t pay our fee just for the sake of investing in the restoration of those families, marriages, or otherwise. We are a center that works from a platform of compassion. Plainly stated, we love people.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There’s a big shift towards telemental health or video conferencing. I now see clients via video from as far away as Iraq. There are those clients who have experienced certain traumas and experience anxiety when being in crowds or certain areas so video conferencing works out better for them.
