Today we’d like to introduce you to Nahum and ReShea Lozano.
Nahum and ReShea, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s not breaking news that COVID has impacted our world on a very real level. In April, I (Nahum) was furloughed from my job. It didn’t come as a shock because we had really felt for a while that we wanted to start something of our own. We didn’t know what or when, but I’ve always wanted to work for my dream instead of building someone else’s. Initially, I thought it would be under the automotive umbrella, but quarantine brought out a new passion I didn’t really know existed.
With all of the extra time on my hands during quarantine, I designed and built a dining table that we desperately needed. I’ve always built things here and there around the house and enjoyed it, but something was different about this table. One Facebook post sharing the table turned into (literally) hundreds of messages asking if we could build a range of objects. Desks, tables, bed frames, you name it. We started building anything we could and here we are, six months later, it’s now my full-time job.
We would never have dreamed that starting our business would look like this. We always thought we would save up thousands, purchase land and have a plan. Also… never thought it would happen in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, but it did! It just goes to show you what hard work can accomplish no matter what your circumstances are. It definitely has not been easy. It’s been a roller coaster, but it’s one I am willing to stay on. We have invested every penny, every late night, absolutely everything we have into our business and we are so excited to see what’s next.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. We’ve faced obstacle after obstacle. It’s been difficult to build a custom furniture and decor business while competing with big box clearance sales amid the economic fallout our community is facing.
It’s been extremely difficult not knowing when we will book another job or have cash flow coming in. Most businesses don’t start making money to be able to pay themselves in the first year, and that really motivated us to work hard and beat that statistic.
Please tell us about Modern Ark Woodworking.
We are a custom furniture and home decor business that specializes in dining furniture and accessories. Over the last few months, we’ve built anything and everything we could, but have really fallen in love with creating unique dining experiences. We are about to roll out some all-new, one of a kind designs along with a brand new website. We guarantee you haven’t seen these designs anywhere else, and we are excited to bring something new to the family dining experience.
We are extremely proud of our unique designs and quality of work. We pride ourselves in building pieces that will last a lifetime (or two!). Family is so important to us. Everything we do, we do for our kids. We want to leave a legacy for them, and that is reflected in our business. We want to create special pieces of furniture that can be handed down to the coming generations. We are different from other makers in that we sketch every design from scratch. We don’t take plans from the internet to build. We design our own plans based on our clients’ needs.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We honestly wouldn’t change anything about our businesses’ birth story. Everything that has happened has grown us, and we’ve learned so many invaluable lessons along the way. If we changed anything, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
