Today we’d like to introduce you to Najwan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Najwan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got into music back in 2011, but it was just a hobby then. My brother and I would find beats on YouTube and record ourselves rapping over them. I wasn’t very good. It wasn’t until 2014 when I felt music could actually be something I could pursue after spending the previous year producing music on nothing but an iPad. I had gotten some positive feedback from friends and family, which helped me make my decision to go full throttle in music. Since then, I have released an EP that I produced and had the help of some talented artists in 2017, the title ‘Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Program.’ I released my solo project, which I produced in full back in 2018 titled ‘December,’ and I also produced an EP in 2019 titled ‘Summer’s Over’ by my guy Hashim.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would’ve liked the road to be smoother but it’s built character over the years. Even to this day, I still face many challenges, both personally and musically. Whether it’s my confidence, comparing myself to others or just trying to find motivation – amongst other struggles. But with the challenges I’m faced with, the most important thing that I try to remind myself of is to think about how and where I started. I’ve been faced with many of the same obstacles since the start of this and I’ve managed to overcome them time and time again. Moral of the story, I just can’t allow myself to quit.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a music producer, artist, and engineer. I think being all three is what sets me apart from most. I make all my beats, I write to them and I engineer my tracks to some extent as well. I would say I’m most known for my production just because that’s how I got started. I didn’t start recording myself until about two or three years ago. And I’d say I’m most proud of my album. It was a culmination of all the skills that I’ve acquired throughout the years coming together on one project. The day I released it was one of the only times in my life where I felt I did something worth truly being proud of.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’m from LA, so moving to Dallas was definitely different; I’ve been here for four years. I am coming up on five in January. I know for sure what I like the least about Dallas is how people drive and how far everything seems from each other. On the flip side of that, I do love how relaxed Dallas is, at least the part I’m in. It’s quiet and serene, which breeds creativity for someone like myself. Most of the progress I’ve made musically and in my personal life has been here in Dallas. I’ve grown so much here, more than I could’ve imagined.
