Meet Nakiedra McCoy of Braids By Kie in Duncanville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakiedra McCoy.

Nakiedra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Braiding is my passion. I love every moment of every style and creation. I started braiding when I was 9 years old. When everyone was outside, I was inside braiding my baby doll. So, when I see young girls today braiding, I greatly encourage them. Not only is anything possible, but they’re capable of making it happen.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It most certainly has not been a smooth ride. Being an everyday worker bee was not for me. Everyone in my corner wanted me to be one but I wasn’t cut from that cloth. I had my boys at a very young age, so that was a struggle. They’re what you call stair steppers. So, child care was definitely an obstacle. Life became so overwhelming at one point that I fell into a state of depression. Not having a place to call my own, not being able to provide for my boys the way I wanted to, trying to live life the way others see fit, and not processing grief. Once I learned that my destiny was written for me, I just had to stay consistent, my world changed. It’s been up ever since.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in braiding. I mean I eat, sleep, breathe braiding. Not just typical braids but every braid you can think of I master it. I’m self-taught on everything. What sets me apart is that I’ve built this family with my clients. I take every bit of customer service skill that the many jobs I failed at taught me and apply it to my name, my business. I truly believe that we can represent ourselves just as well as when marketing others, and become successful.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have so many plans for the future. It’s always been a desire to encourage younger women. I know that my braiding is going to pave the way for my bigger goals. I want to touch lives and encourage them to believe in their selves even when no one else does. Know that they can truly be or do anything they set their minds to. Soon, I want to have a bigger space and a larger team of faith-driven women.
