Today we’d like to introduce you to Narwhals & Waterfalls.
Narwhals & Waterfalls, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We officially met in early 2018. We were both working as music teachers, Paige in public school and Adrien in preschools, and our spouses introduced us to explore collaborating on new materials. From there, things fell into place as we helped each other finish songs we were working on and write some new ones. A few months later, “The Good Day Cha Cha” was live on YouTube, and we’ve been writing and performing ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While there have been struggles, it has all averaged out to a relatively smooth road. Once we found our footing early on, we took the time to establish lofty goals for the future, but also balance them out with challenging yet achievable steps along the way. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to see the fruits of our labor, both in new opportunities and in feedback from teachers, parents, and kids who our music has helped.
Please tell us about your music.
Narwhals & Waterfalls is a kindie-rock band (kids indie-rock) that provides practical songs, curriculum and interactive performances that teach children essential Social and Emotional Learning skills. Last April, we released an album called “Simple SEL,” along with a full curriculum that corresponds with each of our songs. We are extremely proud of the fact that all of our songs will help children to learn skills such as how to express their emotions, ways to regulate and cope with challenging feelings and help to open up important conversations between children and their trusted adults. We also pride ourselves on our interactive live shows because we make a point to connect with all of the kids and families who attend. We work hard to create a safe space for kids to dance, play, explore and learn. And because we are both music teachers, there’s always a rich educational element behind every performance, each song, and all the curriculum that we provide.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
One of my favorite quotes on luck is from Oprah Winfrey: “Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” When we were introduced, both of us had already been working and perfecting our craft as music teachers for close to 10 years. We were both prepared for the work that we’d need to do and, because it was great timing for both of us, we accepted the opportunity. I think in order to experience luck, it’s important to have clear goals so that you can easily recognize a great opportunity when it presents itself. We work hard to continually refine our goals as a company so that we know the right time to say yes, and are as prepared as we can be to take full advantage of opportunities.
