Meet Natalie Muniz of Vanità di Natalie in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Muniz.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in San Jose. While working in the office of a construction company during the day, I attended Cosmetology school in the evening. I was very fortunate to have the girls from the office at work come in at night to get their hair done so I was able to get experience right away. After graduating and receiving my license, I assisted for 3 months at my first salon, I then took on a station and was grateful to grow the business that I had within 2 1/2 years even if it meant putting in over the typical 40hrs a week to become my own boss.

I was crushed when my husband and I moved to the DFW metroplex 4 years ago and I had to refer my clients to other stylists. I had worked so hard to get to the point I was at before we moved. I struggled with the thought of building another business and thought I would just do something else in the beauty industry. When we found out we were expecting our son, I then decided I wanted to be my own boss again and have the flexibility of my own schedule. I have strived since then in rebuilding an amazing clientele here in McKinney and love and appreciate each and every one of my clients and the relationships we have.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, the road has been smooth. Of course, rebuilding a clientele had its ups and downs. However, that was expected. I think one thing I had to conquer when rebuilding my clientele was walking away from the salon I started rebuilding at and going across the street…haha. I was saved by Scott, my roommate at the salon suite, because we were both in the same boat at the previous salon. The funniest thing is we didn’t even know each other prior to working next to each other. We just both knew we came from the same crazy salon and that people without any knowledge of what goes on behind a chair shouldn’t try to tell you how to run your business when you indeed ARE the one behind the chair.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Vanita di Natalie means Natalie’s Vanity which to me means the guest should feel their best before walking away from the mirror after our appointment. I offer everything from cuts to coloring, highlighting and ombre’s as well as extensions and bridal/special event services.

I believe using a balayage technique for highlights sets me apart from others. It’s a free-handed technique that does not require foils. Clients are able to get either a very natural or a very dramatic look with this technique.

I am proud of being versatile in the industry and I think being able to offer a variety of services to clients has helped me grow the broad clientele I have. Not everyone is looking for just a cut or color. They may be engaged and need hair and makeup done for their big day or need to throw in extensions because they have been trying to grow their hair. Being able to adapt and take on different challenges and skills has brought me to the place I am now. I have gone through the Redken Specialist I program as well as I am a PRAVANA Chromasilk Certified Colorist and have also received my PRAVANA Balayage Certification.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
My proudest moment was knowing that I could grow my business again and succeed in another state. In this industry, if you move, you’re starting all over. I worried and dreaded moving here 4 years ago because I was worried about regrowing my business. I can say that I have been driven and worked hard to get to the position that I am now.
