Meet Nate Bishara of Over Magazine in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Bishara.

Nate, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It has been a long journey, but it started when I made the decision that I wanted to be a creative director two years ago and have been working nonstop to achieve that goal. As soon as I started my college journey at the University of North Texas last year, I used the platform I built for myself through social media to meet everyone I could in the Denton, TX area who did some form of art. I realized there was a real need for some sort of platform for these artists as soon as I stepped on campus. So I met with as many “higher-level” students as I could and once my second semester started I got as many as I could to meet up with me to discuss my idea for a Denton based magazine. This is what lead me to my position as founder and Editor-In-Chief of Over Magazine.

From there we started growing in numbers and I met Giuliana Vargas, Over Magazine’s Art Director, she helped us set up our online team. To promote our publication, we worked with some of the people I met while I was learning about the art community in Denton, and had the Over art gallery event at Denton Art Hause to showcase some of our work. We all worked very hard from February to April to get everything ready for our first edition publish date on April 25th, 2019. At our launch party, we went through the whole First Edition and highlighted the artists who took part in each spread. And that was it for our first Spring season, but as summer came I started helping us get more recognition in Dallas, I started going to events and meeting with local businesses. Through this, we got a partnership with How To Be Social and they have helped promote us. Our Fall 2019 season has already started and we are working on it right now!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over ran into a bunch of time-related issues our first go around, but since then used our off time in the Summer to create timelines for when things need to get done and put more systems in place. We also had an issue with not having enough reliable hands on deck, so we set up a leadership team and now have a group of around 20 directors, assistants, and interns.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Over magazine is an online editorial, that connects individuals on the base of creative talents and skills. We have created a community for dedicated creatives to congregate and collaborate. Through our various events and opportunities, many of our members have found their voice, met their creative community and have gotten to experience what it means to be a professional in their line of work. These are some of the many things I am proud of, that Over Magazine has done in just under a year.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Over Magazine is the result of work from many talented artists, but to name a few that stepped up to make Over Magazine what it is today, I’d have to start with Giuliana Vargas. Giuliana helped me found Over and is our Art Director. Emily Elliott, our Graphic and Illustrative Design director as well as our resident badass fine artist. Jaina Wong, who powered through for us by being the best Layout Director we could’ve asked for. Thomas Troung, for helping us connect with a wide variety of visual artists, and for also introducing me to Giuliana. Jackie Hernandez, a wonderful graphic designer, who helped us make our merch and do our live screen printing. Paris Roberson and Anastasia Logan for being top-notch web designers, who did a great job with our website. And Finally, Renacio Reyes, our Fashion Director, who believed in my vision and was the first person I reached out to when I started discussing the magazine.

I would also like to proudly thank Denton Art Hause for believing in us and letting us use their gallery space and How To Be Social for helping us with the network in Dallas. Me and the Over team also appreciate all the support we have gotten from our families and our friends.
