Meet Nathan Hallford of Sloth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Euless

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Hallford.

Nathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ for short) just over 8 years ago. I really dove into the lifestyle that BJJ offers but enjoyed the friendship and almost family like bonds you get with your teammates. After receiving my Black Belt in December, an opportunity to open my gym popped up at the perfect time. I have been teaching and helping with classes for over 4 years so I am really excited to be able to share what I’ve learned with my team.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall, things have worked really well. I have had some downtime in my personal life as well as great support from my wife and close friends. Without them, I wouldn’t even be close to where I am at this point early in the gym. The struggles of getting everything set up from scratch has been the most difficult. From learning to build a website, to getting a logo complete, to even learning how to take payments has all been new to me.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting (without strikes) in order to submit or neutralize your opponent. My style of BJJ is very pressure and conservatively focused where I only move when I’m ready and make sure my opponent is unable to capitalize. It has earned me the nickname of “Sloth” for my slow-moving crushing style.

What really sets me apart is how much I make sure to put my team’s needs ahead of my own. I want to make sure I give them EVERYTHING possible to make them better and give them the best training environment I am able.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a bit of an introvert but generally well liked. I was easy going but tended to stay close to my small group of friends. I had a typical childhood filled with riding bikes, playing baseball, and playing video games. I didn’t have much interest in martial arts until well later into adulthood.
