Meet Neicole Woodall of Genesis Children’s Theatre in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neicole Woodall.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My daughter, Megan Demsky and I started Genesis Children’s Theatre in July 2010. We had a belief that children’s theater should be fun, safe, appropriate, small classes, student focused training and teaching. Our goal was not to be focused on a huge base of students, but have much smaller size classes/productions where the student was given lots of individual attention and trained in the craft. This has produced high quality shows that were not just good “children’s” theater, but good theater in general. Our mission is to create extraordinary theater experiences and to advance theater as a means of educating, challenging and inspiring young people to their full potential. Genesis Children’s Theatre has been voted The Best Children’s Theatre in Plano for the second year in a row.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Never is nonprofit children’s theater easy! You must have a passion for the craft and students focusing on them, not a bottom line. We are constantly thinking outside the box to produce visually beautiful shows with minimal expense. Most working families need the ability to have payment plans, so we must be very conscious of our budgets.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Genesis Children’s Theatre – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the Executive Director. I do a little bit of everything from sewing and painting sets to managing the inner workings of the theater. I guess I am known as everybody’s grandma. I am most proud of the home that we have created at Genesis. Our students and family consider this their second home. It is amazing to sit back and watch these kids at the top of their game because they were loved, encouraged, trained and taught to believe they can do anything if they try hard and don’t give up.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are expanding. We are desperately needing a second rehearsal space for our students.
