Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelson Lo.
Nelson, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked as a computer engineer for 3 years. It was a good paying job, but I was never excited to go to work. I did my job and got promotions then suddenly the company closed down. It was traumatic for a recent graduate. But while I was working as an engineer, I was getting dental work. I just got engaged to my college sweetheart. I wanted to photos of our wedding of me smiling. I had really bad teeth, I never fully smiled. I wanted to look good for my wedding and be able to smile for our wedding photos. I remember getting excited to see my dentist who was doing my cosmetic crowns. On our wedding, I smiled for the first time, it felt amazing. I forgot how good it felt to smile without being self-conscious. This beginning of my career set in motion, but what I didn’t know it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road becoming a dentist. My wife got pregnant during dental school so, I had to juggle fatherhood and studying. But dental school was not hard me in a sense that I understood the materials. But going back to college after graduating and working was a difficult transition. After I graduated dental school, I got into Prosthodontics and Hospital Dentistry Implantology. One specialty was going to give a title and other was going to give me experience. It was a tough decision to make but I decided to go for the experience rather than the title. This specialty program from The University of Chicago was offered for only 1 person and 1000 applied.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Couture Dentistry – what should we know?
My business is in smiles. What a wonderful job I have. I specialize in implantology but I do all dental work from my office. I try not to send my patients to other specialists, I understand that people have busy schedules. They can get their cavities filled or get a full mouth rehab at our office. People love that my office is a full-service dental practice. I am most proud of how we try to give the best care for our patients. We have a philosophy in our office. We always think “Would you want your mother, father, brother, sister and or anyone you love being treated like this?” I can sleep well at night knowing I did my best.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
No one is successful on their own. I gave most of my professional success to Dr. Marcus, Dr. Baer and Dr. Toljanic. They were my template of what a great dentist is. They taught me not only dentistry but also how to care for my patients. I have great respect for them til this day. I will always be thankful to my mentors. Dr. Marcus taught me cosmetic dentistry but he taught me why he was successful. He truly cared for his patients and always did his best for them. Dr. Baer taught me surgery and implantology, he was an amazing surgeon and I always tried to impress him. I wanted to be good a surgery just like him. I really looked up to him and his expertise. Dr. Toljanic taught me Prosthodontics. With all these great teachers to guide me, I had to succeed.

I have been a patient of Dr. Lo since shortly after he started his practice. He has cared for my family as if he was a member of our family – and that is the best recommendation that I could ever give to another person or business. Dr. Lo is a man of honesty, integrity, and amazing skill in his chosen profession who treats his patients and his staff as if they are part of his family. I am thankful to have him taking care of me, my family, and many friends who I have referred to him.
