Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Meagher.
Nick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started with my interest in video games and computers at a very young age. I was never really a great student and ended up spending a lot of time inside on the computer simply because I was bored. Growing up I always pictured myself doing something more active and never really saw myself sitting behind a desk all day, it sounded horrible at the time.
As time progressed, I got more and more interested in how the games and computers worked which eventually led me down the path of hosting a gaming server. That was the first time I built something and felt good about what I had done. I fell in love with that feeling and knew I found something I wanted to pursue. I tried taking a few college courses relating to IT and System Administration, and it sucked the passion right out of me.
At that point, I knew System Administration wasn’t something I wanted to do, but I still wanted to pursue IT in some way. I still loved the idea of creating things, and that’s when my dad mentioned web development to me. Writing code all day never sounded fun to me, but the idea that I could push my ideas to potentially millions of people was what drove me to eventually teaching myself how to code.
From there, I spent every waking hour teaching myself how to code through reading books, YouTube videos, and online courses. In 6 months, I landed my first internship as a web developer at an agency. I learned more working there than any video or book could have taught me, and I am truly grateful for that experience.
After about 2-3 years in the industry and a couple of jobs, I realized I could start my own company doing the same thing, but I felt I could do it better. This eventually led me to create my own company, Icepick, which provided web design & development services. I fell flat on my face for about two years with no real knowledge of how to run a business or even more importantly get clients.
I realized at that point my strength was not in selling but product development and that I needed some help. I eventually merged companies with some of my best friends, and that’s how Primer Co was born.
We have now been in business for three years, and a majority of our work comes from referrals and other marketing agencies that don’t have the in-house design & development talent.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been an easy road, getting clients was definitely our biggest hurdle. Luckily our biggest problem now is bandwidth since we are so overloaded with work and we are so grateful!

What were you like growing up?
I was a very active kid that loved playing basketball, skateboarding, snowboarding, etc. I was never interested in school and always looked forward to being able to hang out with my friends and enjoy the outdoors!
