Today we’d like to introduce you to Norma Barnett.
Norma, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a 11 year old son and a 9 year old daughter and on their birthday parties I always like to go all out but I could never find a person or bakery that would do a beautiful cake but that it also tasted good it was always one or the other on my daughter’s 2nd birthday I was very disappointed so I decided to start taking classes so I can made the cakes myself so I took classes for about 9 or 10 months and for her 3rd birthday it was my first “professional cake” and then I started making for my family and then friends and then coworkers and then I went and got my license and permits and on January 2014 I quit my job after been there for 15 years and started doing nothing but cakes
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not easy at all, advertisement is just super expensive specially for a one person company trying to get started and another very hard thing is that it says it on my website that is a home based business but a lot of times people call and when they realize is from home they change their mind and don’t order anything…
Please tell us about The Little Cake Shop.
I make cakes and cupcakes pretty much for any occasion but my favorites are the wedding cakes, it makes me very proud when I read all of my reviews and I love the fact that I have never got a complaint and that I have many, many repetitive customers, I also make eggless cakes the people that have order it from me has said to me that not very many places make them so they’re very appreciative of my cakes and they have come back many times, what sets me apart from others would be that all of my cakes are custom made to order, my cakes are never frozen or old, you order it, I make it… and I don’t take orders if I’m too busy I give every cake the time and love that it deserves
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my many favorite memories would be that many times my mom would make my birthday cakes and I loved that, nothing better than a delicious taste of a homemade cake made with love.
