Today we’d like to introduce you to N’TYSE.
N’TYSE, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always known since a very young age that I had a knack for storytelling. It was just something therapeutic, uninhibited and liberating about writing and creating that brought me peace whenever I needed it. I also enjoyed just letting my imagination run wild and venturing outside of my own reality.
I started out writing poetry, music and eventually realized that I was a little more long winded than I thought. Before I knew it, I was penning my first novel, “My Secrets, Your Lies”, which ultimately kicked off my writing career. Fast forward several novels later, I got the bright idea to produce a documentary (“Beneath My Skin”) which was inspired by my fictional characters, Sand and Rene, from MSYL. That project was my imperfect pot of gumbo. LOL!
I can honestly say that “My Secrets, Your Lies” was the cornerstone of my creative and literary uprise; yet it also paved the way for me to find my footing in independent filmmaking. Had it not been for me taking the risks, believing in myself, investing in my business, and trusting the process–I would not be in the position I’m in today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fortunately, I’ve been able to overcome the minor challenges I have faced. I’ve learned over the years to embrace adversity because that’s what strengthens our core being. And it prepares us mentally for future tests that are part of a bigger vision than what we can see from the current standpoint.
I always refer to “Beneath My Skin” as being my ‘imperfect pot of gumbo’ because I learned a lot from that single project. A LOT! I had always prided myself as being an expert multitasker, but I learned rather quickly that in film, you need a dedicated TEAM! It doesn’t matter how many roles are hats you can fulfill–filmmaking is a collaborative arena, and the best work is produced when those creative visionaries unite.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I would say I’m most known for my female centric dramas and cautionary “hood” tales that embody flawed characters in compromising scenarios. As a Black, female writer, I feel it is extremely important for us to tell our stories and control our narratives in books and films as much as possible. In order to do that, we have to be willing to insert our voice and stand by the content we create.
I started out self-publishing because I wanted to tell stories that were seemingly being left out of urban literature. In doing so, I was included in the first wave of street-lit authors who featured stories for the LGBTQ readership in a traditional marketplace. Without realizing it, I was already embracing that multi-cultural experience, years ahead of my time, and embedding myself in a reality different from my own, yet, a reality that existed for so many people that I knew. The journey alone taught me to push my pen and embrace the more complex stories that many authors would shy away from. It also taught me how to write unbiased and with more solicitude.
I started Boss Magnet Media, a Dallas, Texas-based film production company, in early 2019 with the hopes of bringing more literary works by African American writers to film. Being in the publishing industry for over 12 years, and as an independent literary agent who has sold and negotiated for nearly 100 books, I can attest that there are groundbreaking stories worthy of the silver screen. What seems to slow the process for many authors from having their works reach that next level, are the proper resources and industry guidance.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe that every blessing for me, in both a personal and business aspect of my life, resulted from a combination of preparation, faith, consistency, and perfect timing. I always say, prayer without action is merely a dream!
