Meet Odunze Oguguo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Odunze Oguguo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Odunze. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Spending most of my youth in Nigeria, there were a lot of electrical blackouts. So I was bored as a kid most of the time, drawing was a way to entertain myself and my friends. I’ve always loved the art of storytelling, especially with mainstream entertainment with comics, film, and animation from all over the world. I’ve been influenced by series from popular series like Marvel’s Spider-man and X-men and then also by series from Japan like Tite Kubo’s Bleach and more. My love for art and storytelling has lead to mean to write and illustrate my action-adventure shonen series called Apple Black, published and serialized by the world’s most diverse manga anthology magazine, Saturday AM, subsidiary of MyFutprint Entertainment, LLC. I also created a Seinen adventure satirical comedy series called, Bacassi, published inside our other magazine, Saturday PM. Saturday PM was also part of my thesis for my Master of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Has it been a smooth road?
One of the many struggles I’ve faced would be juggling, creating my art while attending college. There isn’t enough time in the day to get all you want to do, so a lot of time management has to come into play.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
Starting out in comics, I felt it was best to get my work out there as best I could, so I used social media to my advantage under the name Whyt Manga. Luckily I was able to grow an audience with my art thought Instagram, Youtube, Twitter, and more. I also helped found a comic publishing company called, MyFutprint Entertainment, LLC. MyFutprint officially began in late 2013 and has now since grown to become publishers of the world’s most diverse manga anthology magazines like Saturday AM, Saturday PM, Saturday Brunch, and more, all in our mobile app. Our founder, Frederick L. Jones, coming from the video game industry, saw a lack of diversity in the characters, especially from popular Japanese series. As a result, we champion diversity in all forms with our content and creators. My YouTube channel under the name “WhytMangaTV” built to help other artists learn from my experiences, which has now gained over 300,000 subscribers.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe we are headed towards an industry where there will be heavy demands for content and creators who are even more representative of the world around us. This will apply not just to comics from all over the world but the same will go for film and most other forms of media and as a result, smart companies will adjust, if not for any moral reasoning but for business reasons.
