Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Delavega.
Hi Olivia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I began my journey to midwifery over 13 years ago as a Registered nurse at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Women and Children services. That is where my love for Women’s health started. 8 years into my nursing career I decided to return to school at Texas Tech to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in nursing and then returned a year later to finish up my Master’s in nursing with a specialty track in Midwifery. I was drawn to midwifery by my experiences in caring for mothers and their babies in the hospital setting. I knew in my soul there was a different more holistic way of caring for these mothers who were vastly low risk. I was and still am determined to help as many low-risk mothers have the safe labor and birth that also respects normal physiological birth.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey has not come without twists and turns. Throughout my journey I have had 2 children and although I love them more than life itself, raising children while continuing my education was a bit of a struggle. The last and most impactful struggle I faced was Covid which hit during my last semester of my midwifery program. I was immensely blessed to have had 2 birth center settings for my clinical rotations and the midwives who were precepting me allowed me to remain while many in my cohort lost their clinical sites.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sweet Pea Midwifery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
