Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Mendoza.
Oscar, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I ‘am the product of the DISD school system. I grew up in North Oak Cliff Texas, also known as Bishop Arts where I attended James Hogg Elementary, Greiner Middle School, and Sunset High School. My family came from Mexico in the early seventies and was extremely poor. At an early age, I was diagnosed with dyslexia, because of my learning disability I failed my second-grade class and my senior year of high school. I never let my shortcomings get the best of me, in a matter of fact they made me stronger and more determined. I went on to get a degree in Management Information System from St. Mary’s University, and an MBA from Texas A&M University-Commerce. I also own several businesses and have written one book, and I am about to publish my second book. My first book called Book of the dead is in the process of becoming a television series, and my stories are being featured in popular paranormal programs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, my life was extremely difficult. Not only did I have a learning disability, but I was peer pressured by the local street gangs. I was constantly bullied at school for being poor and not knowing how to read.
My first struggle was dyslexia.
My second struggle was being poor.
My third struggle was the local peer pressure to conform to what my teachers taught I was, which was just a stupid kid from the streets.
My forth struggle was my family who didn’t believe in me.
My last struggle was myself, I had low self-esteem.
My last struggle was the fact that was strange. If you don’t know, I can see the dead.
Not only did I fear to go to school because of the bullies, but I also feared to sleep in my room, because it was haunted.
What do you do? What do you specialize in?
I have several companies.
I have Echo Urban Builders, it’s a construction company. We specialize in tile work, and flipping houses.
Also, I own Echo Urban Tour Company. We are a tour agency that operates out of Oak Cliff.
I am also a published Author. My book is called the book of the dead, and my follow up book id called the Dead Follow.
What I am proud of is, that I employee ex-con’s and teach them business management through my companies.
I love my community and I want to give back, and I do so with my company and books.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing, my struggles made me a better man.
