Meet Oscar Mendoza of The Law Office of Oscar Mendoza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Mendoza

Oscar, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am native of Dallas, Texas, lived most of my life here, I wouldn’t live anywhere else honestly, love it here

son of immigrants from Mexico

University of Dallas, undergrad, BA in chemistry

University of Houston Law Center for four years, had to work to maintain myself while going to law school, only time that I have lived outside of Dallas

I always had an inquisitive mind, loved school and learning while growing up, I am attracted by discussions of higher subjects, like philosophy, culture, politics, mathematics and science

Before law school, I worked as a legal assistant to an immigration lawyer which opened the door to me to practice this subject as an attorney.

I cannot say that I entered this field because of my familial background. I never really thought myself any different from other people growing up because I was a son of immigrants. I perhaps fell into practicing immigration law due to the opportunities that presented themselves to me like the opportunity to work as a legal assistant with an immigration lawyer. But I find meaning in helping immigrants legalize their status in the USA. I experience a joy when I win an asylum case for my clients in court, for example, and can’t help get emotional with my clients when they win.

I also am driven to excel in my immigration practice and skills by the excitement of winning in court. For me, a trial lawyer is the best sort of lawyer and I seek to continue to be a good trial lawyer

I also am glad to have started my own law office, which I thought I would never do. I think it is important to me to be a business owner and I seek to expand to other businesses in the future.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No,

In two ways

Economically, I come from a low income family, my parents were low skilled and education individuals, but with a great work ethic. Unfortunately, there are not many opportunities for individuals with this background. So, I did not have many economic support to pursue my education. I did graduate with honors from high school so I managed to qualify for scholarships, grants and federal aid. These opportunities funded most of my university education. But I did have to work through college and law school to manage to support my personal expenses, living expenses. And I had to do without many luxuries, comforts while at university. This was not always easy trying to manage all these responsibilities and doing without certain comforts. I had to learn how to forgo many plans and goals to the future. I had to complete law school in four years instead of the normal three years. and I started late my career (at 28 years old became licensed lawyer; my own law office started at 34 years old).

Personally, I did not have extensive support while studying, guidance from important individuals like my parents (how could they given their background?) or siblings to help me navigate my education. I am the first JD and professional in my family. I had to figure things out by myself. There were many moments of solitude while studying at the university level.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We pride ourselves in our emphasis on client communication and responsiveness and customer service. Many lawyers avoid talking to the client as much as possible. We build a culture that emphasizes client contact and care.
