Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Wilken.
Paige, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first realized my love of photography when I took a photography class in high school. It started off as something that I enjoyed doing with my friends, and it turned into something that I wanted to do every day of my life. I started off photographing mainly senior portraits for friends at school, then I got asked to take photos at a friend of a friends wedding and that’s where I found my passion for documenting love stories!
I moved from Iowa to Texas two years ago and that is when I buckled down and really started to turn my passion into a business. I second shot for several well-known photographers in the area, went to workshops, read all the books and practiced until I felt like I had my own vision and style of photography. I now focus on couples and families, and love every minute of it! Photography is the creative outlet I need, and it has given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road is never completely smooth because I believe there is always room for growth! The hardest part of building a successful business for me was the social aspect of it. Don’t get me wrong- I love meeting new people! It took me awhile to get used to putting myself out there, hanging out business cards, instructing huge groups of people at weddings on how to pose, I had to push myself to do those things at first.
Once you do something that makes you nervous so many times, it gets easier and then you move on to the next thing that you can improve upon. Photography has pushed me to grow not only in my creative knowledge and skills but as a person, and I’m grateful for that.
Please tell us about Paige Wilken Photography.
I document love stories! I specialize in couple and family portraits/adventure sessions. I also photograph weddings, small events/elopements, and occasionally fashion/styled portraits. I am most known for my couple sessions and my use of sunlight. I always shoot at sunset and I have a talent for using light to my advantage to create dramatic images.
I am most proud of my ability to make my clients feel comfortable and have a fun laid back time during their session! I love learning your story and bringing out the unique elements of you in the photos. I am able to capture light-hearted images as well as the deep emotional detail images in a cohesive way that my clients really appreciate.
My editing style is what really sets me apart from other artists, I love deep colors and dramatic lighting. I want my images to make you stop and stare, while still feeling timeless.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would start by focusing right away on couples and families instead of starting with senior portraits. The bond between people that love each other is what fuels my love for photography and if I had known that sooner I could have skipped the transition.
