Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Pamela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Mental health counseling is my second career. I worked in the insurance field for over 20 years. I was actually inspired by my mentor, DeNette Vital, Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor. I searched for a career that would offer flexibility, financial freedom, and entrepreneurship. I saw a growing need in the community for Black and Brown women. I saw the need for them to have a safe space. A safe space to be vulnerable, a safe space to hurt, and process. This need motivated me to become a licensed professional counselor.
Practicing over the years has given me a different insight on the human mind. I am largely interested in behaviors and neuroscience. I have been trained as a neuro coach, trained to identify and treat highly sensitive persons, and soon to be trained on hypnotherapy and brainspotting.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a very interesting journey to say the least. The struggles of the internship are not for the faint of heart. The process of becoming licensed in the state of Texas is challenging. It requires patience and determination. And becoming a first-generation business owner comes with its own set of challenges. Some years later, some blood, a lot of sweat and even more tears, I managed to make it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My mental health practice has evolved and now includes a top-rated international podcast called itsALLMental. We are going into our second year, third season! I have also founded a non-profit, GlassSeats, where we train Black & Brown girls in unique careers offered in STEM, finance, arts, sports & politics, preparing them to break glass ceilings and take seats at tables of their choosing.
I specialize in working with Black & Brown females and pre-premarital couples of color who want to become unstuck in their current lives, break past barriers & create a new journey for themselves. What sets me apart from others is I am largely interested in behaviors and neuroscience. I have been trained as a neuro coach, trained to identify and treat highly sensitive persons, and soon to be trained on hypnotherapy and brainspotting.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have combined mental health counseling and neuroscience with, heavy emphasis on neuroscience.
