Meet Paola Hilla of Unique Cakes by Paola in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paola Hilla.

Paola, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Unique after I moved to Dallas, I wanted my boys to have special and beautiful birthday parties, and so people started asking me to help them with theirs. It went from just decorating fun and unique cake tables to adventuring in specialty cakes that became my main focus and business. It has been a learning experience since day one. I just love pretty things and specially Unique and special ones, so making my clients happy with their cakes has become my one priority, and assuring them that each of my creations are specially made for them. I don’t just make cakes, I make memories and special moments. My clients become my friends. I don’t see my work as a transaction but more like an opportunity to make a new friend who will share with me their special occasions. It is my honor to be ask to be part of their celebrations and so for that I take it very seriously. My business has grown in the past 9 years and has become now a part of me.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everyday I think it’s a new challenge, I am a self-taught specialty cake baker, so everyday I learn something new. I definitely have grown since I started, and I perfect my art each day, not without challenges. The weather in Dallas is brutal, and ever changing and cakes are not really fans of humidity or hot weather, so sometimes it is a real struggle to get even the simplest of cakes to come out right. You have to be patient and learn that sometimes it will take hours of hard work, and then some days will be easy as pie. I am a perfectionist so that itself is a challenge, I can’t have a cake that doesn’t meet my standards leave the house. It is also challenging being a mom and a wife and handling a cake business, but surely it makes me a better person, and a better role model for my kids. Never give up on your dreams and do what makes you happy!

Unique Cakes by Paola – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am best known for making delicious from scratch cakes with unique designs. You will not only get a beautiful cake full of details but a yummy delicious cake as well. I specialize in fondant cakes, which gives it a smooth finish and allows me to work my magic on the details. I also do a lot of hand painted cakes as well specialty cupcakes. I feel that what sets me apart from other bakers is the love and attention to detail I put into each one of my creations, I want my clients to feel special and happy when they see their cakes, I want it to be an experience, a very Unique experience. That will start from the moment they contact me to the first look at their cake and of course the delicious first bite. I try not to repeat cakes, so each client has their own and Unique cake! I have been using my mom’s vanilla cake recipe since day one, and it is to date the best seller, I guess love really translates into my baking! You know that with one of cakes goes lots of love and dedication.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think my proudest moment has been realizing that even without professional training I have made my love for creating pretty things a reality! Knowing that my clients come back and back again, and that I continue to be part of each one of their special celebrations bring me joy and pride. I have donated a whole lot of cakes during the past years for special causes dear to my heart, and that may be some of my proudest moments, giving back.

• Specialty cakes go from $3.25 per person and up to $4.50 a piece depending on work and tiers
• Specialty cupcakes range from $2.25 up to $3.50 depending on work
