Meet Dr. Patrice May of Uppity Lifestyle in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Patrice May.

Dr. Patrice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Interesting, my new chapter in life started in a very dark place, a place where I allowed my light to grow dim. I was simply going through the motions of life but really stuck in a dark place where all my dreams were fading away I am grateful to say life had been pretty good to me, but one day I noticed my outgoing personality was gone, or let me say it this way my creativity to inspire myself and others had gone dim. My daydreams and sleepless nights were full of promising visions.  However, sadly all undiscovered in this dark place, until one day the pain of me not being everything I knew I could be caused me to take action and create a plan for my own success.

Yes, you heard it pain caused me to create a plan. I started really small with, treating myself to fresh flowers, which led me to admiring the beauty of creation and I quickly realized I was made out of that same creation to bring joy, hope and inspiration to others. I was so excited with my discovery I started posting “Be InSpired” beautiful flower pictures on my social media pages and people replied with likes, I knew I was on to something great. My creativity would not allow me to rest, so I invited a few coworkers and friends together to join me for The “Be InSpired” Lifestyle Show; a time inspiration.

The guest enjoyed the show so much it became a monthly event with fashion, jewelry and wellness vendors. As the event host, I introduce inspirational  lifestyle tips, entertainment and, most of all, encouragement. To my surprise, people wanted more, action steps or a  resource guide on how to “Be InSpired”, which led me to author UPPITY: 21 Days to “Be InSpired” A Self Care guide with prayers to uplift the Soul, Mind and Body. I shared on my show and in my book how faith in God with actions steps will bring you and your dreams out of a dark place, and what an amazing journey this has been.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Rocky road, to say the least, the road has not been smooth. As with anything that is going to be great, you need a team to help and support you.  For me funding, marketing and audience attendance was a big challenge, however the biggest challenge was securing a committed team. To produce The “Be InSpired “Lifestyle Show, there were a lot of moving parts. It required an action plan which could be repeated each month. It became difficult when depending on volunteers who committed to be in place, requested payment for their volunteer time or reneged on their commitment , this caused setbacks. The setbacks caused a lot of delays and major disappointments. The disappointment in the lack of loyalty was piercing as I trusted people with my vision to carry out a portion of the vision.  I was unable to do everything, it is not humanly possible for a visionary to single handedly carry out every part of their vision. A good, faithful, loyal and committed team has been the greatest struggle for me along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your work.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
In the most simple way, I am basically a creative educator and my proudest moment in my career so far is my ability to offer academic services to children and families. As the founder of Inspire Academy, an afterschool and summer camp program, the agency offers a host of services to support families and children in the area of academic enrichment, college/career readiness, self-care and physical wellness. I am so proud to serve my city in this way.
