Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Nichols.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Patricia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, my baking journey began exactly five years ago – December 2014. I complained to a coworker about how tired I was of buying cakes from local stores/bakeries that just weren’t good. I mean, we pay so much money for dry cake and mediocre icing. I can’t believe people are okay with that. The conversation lead to my desire to learn to bake the BEST cakes, specifically pound cakes. We continued to discuss this off and on for about a week or so and one day I saw a large gift bag from my Secret Santa. Inside the bag was a bundt pan and an electric mixer. I was BEYOND excited!
I started off trying to perfect the classic seven up the cake and when I did it became the most requested item at every event/kickback that I attended. I love watching others reaction when they try my cakes. It truly makes my heart smile. One day I considered getting a second job as an extra stream of income but didn’t want to take time away from my family. I prayed and asked God for guidance on what I should do and he said, “Do what you’ve BEEN doing – bake cakes!” This was very hard for me because as much as people love my cakes, I didn’t know if they would buy them. Shortly after I decided to open my own business, Trisholicious Treats.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not AT ALL! haha. I don’t think people realize how hard baking is. It’s very time consuming, tedious and messy (the clean up is the worst lol). Trying new recipes can be discouraging as well. There were times when I pulled a cake from the oven (super excited because it was a new flavor) only for the entire cake to deflate or make a translucent glaze. I would be so disappointed, but I quickly had to realize that everything is a learning opportunity. Another struggle I had was charging people for the cakes. As I mentioned before I baked for free all the time, especially for my family and friends. I had to learn how to price and charge for the quality of my cakes, my hard work and time. Also, time management is a struggle as well. I have a full time job, a family and a business. Finding time to do everything is a bit challenging at times.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am Patricia Nichols, owner and operator of Trisholicious Treats. I specialize in baking pound cakes from scratch. I am proud of my growth as a small business owner. As mentioned before baking is extremely time consuming and hard. I didn’t think my business would be this successful in under one year.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a goofy kid who loved sweets. Do you know how people say they have a sweet tooth? Well, I had sweet teeth! haha. I always volunteered to help my mom and grandma in the kitchen. When I was old enough I would bake boxed cakes and brownies all the time.
