Meet Patrick Antaki of seeBOOST in Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Antaki.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Patrick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I and my other 2 co-founders had a lot of experience in head-mounted electronics (displays, sensors, cameras) from our history in defense and consumer electronics work. We were looking for a way to utilize our experience and talents for a compelling use case. It took us several years of searching until we “discovered” vision loss due to Age-related Macular Degeneration and Diabetes. We then decided that we could, in fact, make an impact by developing a product (now released) to help these persons whose vision is severely compromised. In the process, we had to also had to educate ourselves on many aspects that we never really considered before: medical, physiology, psychology, human factors, and so on. We’re now very glad that we embarked on this mission, even though it took us in some unexpected directions, because, at the end of the day, our spirits are literally “boosted” with each happy customer when they regain some of the lost vision directly as a result of our personal efforts. That gives us more energy and enthusiasm to continue to improve our technology since there is so much more to go until we are able to replicate the “artificial eye” that is our ultimate goal.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As we started to test and then sell our product to more and more elderly visually impaired persons, the key struggle has been for us to be able to learn how to empathize in a respectful but also effective manner. As technologists, we were not trained in this area.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We created a new category of prescription glasses for persons coping with incurable vision loss as a result of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) or diabetes. Our product, called seeBOOST, represents a quantum leap in the availability of assistive devices for these individuals.

What were you like growing up?
Very, very nerdy.
