Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Garrett.
Paul, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was working for J. P. Morgan Chase as a Business Analyst and wanted something different. My line of business would often have town hall meetings and different things to try to boost morale. One day, my VP suggested that I MC the meetings and come up with creative ideas to make the experience more enjoyable. Things went so well, that other line of business’ wanted me to do the same for their departments.
After doing this for about a year and a half, a VP’s secretary suggested that I start charging for my services. I had no idea that I could charge the company for such services even though I never did. Not long afterwards, I saw and add to become a John Maxwell Certified Leadership Coach, Trainer and Speaker. I decided to sign up for the program and quickly got introduced to a community that contained people just like me. After learning the business, I started conducting leadership mastermind groups.
Shortly thereafter, I decided to attend a conference that featured the number one motivational speaker, Dr. Eric Thomas. I was blown away. Dr. Thomas was introducing a new certified speaker’s program for those who wanted to better their speaking career. I thought this was a prime opportunity to be a part of something great and get involved on the ground floor. After a few months, I became an Eric Thomas Certified Speaker.
My coach by the name of Chris Daniel wanted me to try being a business consultant. I was totally against it at first, but after much convincing, I decided to take a try at it. I did some work with ETA, a two man team, we helped create a new booking system that would reduce the rate of lost or inquiries. This system tripled the monthly income generated by bookings for the company in one month. After placing the system in place permanently and hiring someone to run it full time, this amount subsequently doubled our testing month.
After that, I went to get certified as a business consultant with Innermetrix and I have never looked back. This has created more business, corporate training and speaking opportunities.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has not been a smooth road. It is not easy cashing in and betting it all on yourself. You have to be willing to go all-in and even when it doesn’t look like it is going to happen for you, you still have to believe in yourself.
I went for two years without making any money. I was continuing to invest in learning systems trying to learn what I didn’t know. Learning how to brand, learning how to market online and just learning the business of consulting and personal development period. All of this takes money and at some point, you just want to give up and throw in the towel. Just one year ago when I wanted to get certified as a business consultant, my coach passed away unexpectedly which was a major blow two weeks before officially launching the business. I was down to my last $1600 and my training was $1200. I decided to sell one of my two vehicles and I thought, I have come this far, I may as well continue to bet on myself. This put me in a place of no longer having any overhead and I truly had to go out and earn money in order to purchase any necessities. One valuable lesson I learned in all of this is that if you lack resources, then you need to make yourself resourceful.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Paul Garrett & Associates, LLC story. Tell us more about it.
As a business consultant, I help organizations learn how their employees and customers think, behave and communicate. What we call, The Problem is how do some people achieve a high level of success with minimal effort? While others with the same education and training do not have the same success and putting forth a lot more effort.
We use an Advanced Insights Assessment that assesses your team’s behavior, motivators and defines what their true talent is. With this assessment, we can also make sure you have your employees in the correct position that fits their talents. Our goal is to make sure your team is operating in the 5th level of performance which is the Genius level. The Genius level of production is when you’re able to take what is in your mind subconsciously and execute.
I am so happy that I get to help people raise their conscious level to discover their true talent and take the stress away from trying to be something that they are not. We don’t believe in weaknesses. We believe in talents or non-talents. Either God gave you something or he didn’t. The key is to trust in what He gave you and not manufacture a weakness by trying to put in what He left out. This is what sets us apart from everyone else.
We focus on the talent and the areas that are non-talents. We help build a system to help you in that area of non-talent or hire someone to do what you cannot do in order to achieve success with minimal effort. Once we assess your team, we believe in providing the assessment in the hiring process to make sure you’re targeting and hiring the right talent for your teams and situations.
Now, we’re very excited by adding corporate training to our list. We found that 42% of managers never have received any training. Therefore, now after assessing your teams and bringing more awareness of how to place them in areas of their talents, we are now able to give situational leadership training for your managers to now bring their level of performance a higher level while giving them the tools to get even better production from their teams.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not a believer in luck per se’… I believe in putting in the hard work, making the right decisions and being true to who you are will position you right where you need to be. I have been fortunate to meet some extraordinary people and they invested in me with wisdom, knowledge and their platform.
These are opportunities that I don’t take for granted. Even in what looks like failure, it isn’t failure, it is a lesson learned. It comes down to your belief system and if you truly believe what has been placed on the inside of you. I am a firm believer that your gift is the key to your wealth. Most of the time it’s that thing we just do that we tend to overlook. We overlook what it is we just do thinking that it must be something different. When you believe in that gift or natural talent that has been placed on the inside of you, success can be achieved with minimum effort.
