Today we’d like to introduce you to Pearl Russell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My grandmother is an acupuncturist, and she always wanted one of her grandchildren to learn acupuncture so she could pass on her “ancient Chinese secrets”. I worked for years in marketing, but eventually felt like I needed a change. I wanted to do something where I could help people and make a difference, so I decided to pursue my Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Texas Health and Science University in Austin, TX. Today, I share a clinic with my grandmother, and I am lucky enough to spend some time each week observing her treatment protocols, asking her questions, and gleaning insights from her 50 years of acupuncture practice.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall it has been pretty smooth. There are definitely things you learn as you go when starting a small business. Health insurance was particularly difficult to navigate at the beginning. There is also the common small business issue of work/life balance. I make myself available to patients as much as possible, but I must often be firm with business hours in order to spend time with my family.
Please tell us about Pearl Acupuncture.
I specialize in chronic pain and women’s fertility, but patients come to see me for all kinds of issues, including but not limited to digestion, depression, and skin issues. Acupuncture can treat most anything apart from broken bones, and even then, acupuncture can help you heal faster. There are many styles of acupuncture, and each acupuncturist is different. I am very fortunate for the opportunity to learn from my grandmother. Unfortunately, I know that will not last forever, so I seek out other styles and techniques of practice. The constant study of different treatment techniques allows me to have lots of tools in my tool belt.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Aside from starting the journey of becoming an acupuncturist sooner, I would not change a thing. Every step that I’ve taken has been a great learning experience, and every day is filled with new and interesting patients and symptoms that I get to help with.
