Today we’d like to introduce you to Petya Hatch.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Petya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My path to starting photography was pretty unusual. If someone told me that I would be a photographer after getting my bachelor’s degree, I would probably laughed in their face.
It all started after I had my first son. I received a small crochet gift given to me by my mother-in law. I thought to myself, “I am a mom and I didn’t really make anything for my own child”. I always buy things from the store, so I had that guilt. A few months later I was learning how to crochet and knit. It turned out that I love it, so much that I decided to open a small Etsy shop with crochet and knit items. The need for interesting photographs to sell your handmade creations eventually turned into photography. Once I started photographing babies with my handmade outfits, I was hooked. I knew that I wanted to be a photographer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a hard road that I have traveled to get where I am today with photography. I stated my business while living in Maine. I had such a desire to do photography and living in a small town in Maine was not getting me the number of clients I wanted. I had so much I wanted to do and had so many creative ideas. A lot of times I would just do pictures for free so I could do something new or something artistic. I knew that this was what I wanted to do in life, so one day in early 2017 my family and I packed up and moved to Texas. I wanted to be around more people, so I could do more work and do the creative artwork that I wanted to do. Moving to Texas has been a hard road as well. I am really starting my business from scratch and developing a following for my artwork. So far, I have been so blessed by the people I have met and worked with and look forward to the coming years.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Petya Hatch Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Petya Hatch Photography specializes in newborn, maternity, and family photography. My favorite work has always been newborns. I also photograph seniors and weddings when time allows. I am a very creative person and I just love doing all types and photography.
What sets me apart from other photographers, is my dedication to give people images that they absolutely LOVE!
For newborn sessions, I hand make all of my own props for each session. Every session it totally unique and I make custom knit items for each family. I spend so much time even before the baby is born making items for their session.
For the maternity and family sessions, I want to give families amazing images that they will love forever. I want to give images that are creative and artistic that they could not get anywhere else. I always strive to produce images that are far beyond the family’s expectations. I am far from a normal photographer. I take basic images from the camera and develop them through editing into something that is a piece of art. If my clients don’t say, “WOW” when they receive their galleries, then I did not do my job.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Everything that I am today is really based on luck. I am originally from Bulgaria. When I was in college, I got the opportunity to come to the US to work during the summers through my university. I was given two choices for where I could go to work. Not knowing anything about either location, I chose to work in Maine. During my time there, I met the man who would later be my husband and business partner. The luck that we would find each other from half the world apart is a million to one. My passion for my work has also brought him into photography as well. We have been married for 10 years now and love working together as photographers.
