Meet Phoebe Dyer of Mrs. Stitches Women’s Formal Alterations in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoebe Dyer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Phoebe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started sewing when I was about 15 years old, I was homeschooled and my mom taught me some basics. My first project, with the help of my mom, was a white hooded robe with a flower applique trim for my niece. As much as I enjoyed my projects, I didn’t really get into sewing and alterations until 2012. I was 17 and I started working as a seamstress assistant at Stephanie’s Bridal Shop in Pennsburg, PA, just 10 minutes from where I grew up. I worked for the summer and loved learning how to handle wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, prom gowns and more. That fall, I studied Apparel, Textiles and Design at a private college for two semesters, after which I returned to the bridal shop in May of 2013. By 2014 I was sewing the dresses and doing the fittings as one of the full times seamstresses. That same year, I started altering dresses from home on the side. On January 2nd, 2016, I married my best friend and moved to McKinney, Texas, where I continue to sew out of my home.

Has it been a smooth road?
Just like any journey, there’s going to be struggles. There have been times that I wasn’t sure if this was what I wanted or should do with my life. But, over the years, the more experience I get and the more wonderful people my work brings into my life, the more I realize this is what I am meant to do. I love sewing and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mrs. Stitches Women’s Formal Alterations story. Tell us more about the business.
I have done many different types of sewing but I specialize in women’s formal alterations, wedding and prom gowns, bridesmaid and mother of the bride, and flower girl dresses, etc. and occasionally custom veils and headpieces! I do my best to provide quality work at a reasonable price, and a personal experience that you might not get from a bridal shop. I try to really develop relationships with the women I sew for and I get many repeat customers that I’m excited to continue working with!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Dresses seem to be getting more and more detailed. Long, flowy and whimsical is becoming more and more popular and I enjoy watching the changes!

Pricing:

  • Prices really just depend on how the dresses are constructed but typically wedding gowns range from $100-$350. I always go over the dresses to make sure everything is secure and then I steam the gowns before the pickup appointment!
