Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoebe Joynt.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My artistic story began as soon as I could hold a pencil. I’ve always had a sketchbook and pencil handy ever since. I felt most at home in the art classroom and really spent a lot of time surrounded by art and creating it. I went to school for illustration design, with an emphasis on painting. Since that time my work has evolved to a more of street style / live painted style. I enjoy sharing my art with the world and those around me. I like to make my artwork accessible to everybody, not just in a gallery setting. My creative style is constantly changing and I look forward to the journey I embark on with it.
Please tell us about your art.
I create illustrative style murals either at home in my studio large scale or out in the streets. I typically have a human figure as a focal point, I like painting other humans because I really like capturing the aliveness in eyes. A few years ago, my medium of choice was primarily acrylic paints, but I also have a background in screen printing. I have always had mixed mediums in all artworks I create. Lately I have been exploring more with spray paint and stencil and pattern. Spray paint is definitely a new medium for me and I’m having a lot fun exploring with it. I get inspiration from the colors in nature, from other muralists, from urban environments and from beautiful photos I find.
I just want my work to add a little more beauty to this already gorgeous world we live. I want to make people smile and take away happiness and joy from my work. It’s why I primarily work with bright color schemes, there’s been a lot of negativity lately and. I feel that we all deserve some bright, happy things to look at in this world.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think the biggest lesson I have learned in the past couple years has been to just keep going. Keep pushing yourself. Even if you feel that no one is paying attention to your work or no one cares about it; just keep doing it. The love you generate and use to create your work will eventually resonate with people, they just haven’t seen it yet. It’s easy to have a lot of self-doubt in this industry. But the best lesson I can give when artists are experiencing lows, just keep going, keep your head high, keep creating art, and keep telling yourself you’re an exceptional human, even when you don’t feel it at times. Just keep going. The world needs the work you and only you can create; it craves it.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a portfolio site at: phoebejoynt.com. I primarily stay most up to date with projects and paintings and events through my Instagram account @feebee_n_jay. You can usually find one of my murals over at Hope Outdoor Gallery in Austin, TX. I love to go there and practice and add even more color to those walls.
I am currently accepting commissioned pieces, so if anyone really likes what they see on my social platforms / website I am available to work with clients and create something beautiful to add to their home. I think buying from local artists is a great way to support creatives and also enhance your own living spaces and life.
