Today we’d like to introduce you to Porshe Chiles.
Porshe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve worked in higher education for twelve years. I specialize in intercultural competence, social justice education, and international education. My job required me to present and do workshops on these topics. In that time, I realized that a lot of surface-level concepts that I presented on seemed to be revolutionary to the participants. The more I experienced this, the more I realized that practitioners were seeking innovative and informative perspectives on these topics.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to entrepreneurship has been a rocky one. My work is directly linked to global engagement, and the pandemic has shifted how the entire field approaches cross-cultural engagement.
I was set to launch my online curriculum for students preparing to study abroad and a curriculum for study abroad practitioners, summer 2019. COVID-19 changed all of those plans. Institutions are grappling with the changes and impacts that COVID-19 has dealt with.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a consultant who specializes in International Education, Social Justice Education, and Intercultural Competence. I am most proud of the work I’ve done focusing on the intersections of global and domestic cultural competence and cultural humility. In my twelve years of experience, I continue to see institutions address global and domestic cultural issues independently. I take a blended approach.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as having opportunities to engage in work that is meaningful and transformative, not only for myself but for the students and practitioners I serve. Sometimes I get to experience when a concept truly connects with a student or practitioner. Their ability to connect the concept to their personal and professional lives. However, many times, I know that a concept may not hit home with someone until they’ve been in a situation or space that pushes them beyond their comfort zone into a learning zone.
