Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Ruiz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Priscilla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always been into arts so I decided to take a photography class in high school. On the first day, my teacher made a camera obscura with our classroom and I was so amazed—since then, I was hooked. I decided to study photography in college where I learned about a lot of the greats like Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Miles Aldridge, and Diane Arbus. Right after graduation, I was hired as a product photographer and then I decided to move back to Dallas to freelance. It’s been quite the ride. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and shoot with so many great people, photograph events, cars, concerts—it’s been worth it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anyone working for themselves can say it’s a ‘smooth’ ride. It’s been difficult and challenging, but very rewarding. The hardest part has been marketing—it’s really not my forte. Nevertheless, I love my life as a photographer and I hope to keep learning, improving, and reaching my goals.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Priscilla Ruiz Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I feel like there are two parts to my business: portrait photography and commercial photography. I enjoy photographing and interacting with people on a one-on-one basis. I think what sets me apart is my art background. I received a fine arts degree and I really like to make every shoot unique and artistic whether it’s through location, lighting, editing, etc. I really try to figure out what a person is looking for in their shoot and run with it. I feel really proud when both the client and I are happy with the results–it makes the struggle worth it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have really great work opportunities through meeting people because I’ve gone out of my comfort zone. I’ve been through difficulties in both my personal and business life, but time is linear and I can only keep improving through my own will.
