Quela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Oh wow… so, I began doing hair when I was about 11 years old. It was routine for me to go to the hair salon every Thursday to get my hair done which for any little girl is super fun however, my mom took me to an older salon with more “seasoned” stylist. So, the styles I would select they weren’t necessarily hip to so I would pay close attention to how they styled and cared for my hair than would go home and modify it to my likings yet make sure it looked very similar to how I left the salon. I would hear so often during high school that I should go to cosmetology school but because I didn’t want to become a statistic, I definitely rejected the idea and replied with “nope I’m going to be a Doctor!” Well, needless to say, I never made it to med school nor cosmetology for that matter. After years passed and my husband decided to pay homage to his late Aunt and lock his hair, I had to pick up a new skill of maintaining Locs and it was then when I discovered my niche. Still not wanting to really “do hair,” I could remember praying that God directed me to MY path and without advertising, I began to get clients. Due to an unexpected pregnancy and looking for extra income, I decided to officially market myself as a business just to see if this was truly what I was designed to do in this particular season and surprisingly Royal Vibez was created with a decent clientele base. Shortly after losing my corporate job, I took a huge leap of faith and leased a salon suite and Became self-employed.
Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, yes, it has! The only true bumps that I’ve experienced during this particular business journey has been myself. I’ve allowed my doubts turn into fear and missed opportunities because of insecurities. It wasn’t until I truly gave God free range to have his way that I realized he is in control and I’m just here to do my part. Trusting him is what got me here and what will keep me until it’s time to transition into the next phase of my business.

Royal Vibez is a natural hair bar that specializes in locs, pure embracement of natural beauty and spreading DOPE vibes! Personally, I live by the motto of treating others how you want or expect to be treated so before anything, customer service is a priority! I make sure each client understands that I’m more than appreciative for them because there are 1,000’s of locticians in the DFW area and yet they chose ME! My gratitude is what sets me apart from others. The four walls of my suite are designed as a safe place, a place to unwind, relax, vent, laugh, cry, brainstorm, pray or just be silent. Whatever the client needs if it’s within reason, it’s my pleasure to provide.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! Dallas has always been known for one of the top cities to be in hands down. With Locs being such a trend for many, it’s perfect for me, especially in my area! Desoto doesn’t have as many locticians like the more popular area such as Arlington, Fort Worth or Plano. I absolutely love it! Having the advantage to gain clientele, educate individuals on natural healthy hair and how to embrace their journey and fade away from the “trend” confirms I’m exactly where I am supposed to be and I love every once of it!
