So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As long as I can remember, my Granny and Mom instilled in my sister and I to take pride in our appearance. She especially admired the effort I put into my skin care. Inadvertently, this was the beginning of my road to self-care and beauty.
What started out as a hobby quickly turned into my passion. My lash lady would always say, “Q, you should get into lashes since you love makeup and beauty stuff.” At first, I blew it off thinking I make good money working in the Human Resources Corporate America world. I thought I would get tired of catering to people their scheduling needs or have an issue with people in my personal space. I decided to give it a try after finding out the earning potential in this industry, the ability to make my own hours and work for myself.
Once I set my mind on learning something, it consumes me. I quickly had to realize a few things:
-Anyone can teach you the technique but it’s up to YOU to master it.
-There is no way around it; you must practice!
-Never compare your work to anyone else.
-Last must not least: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
Has it been a smooth road?
No way! Having to find the balance between my full-time job and family life was my first obstacle. I am very thankful to my little family for being understanding and encouraging at the beginning of my lash journey.
At first, lashing seemed like the hardest thing in the world. I was super hard on myself. It used to take me about 3.5 hours to complete a full set. I ensure an extension is applied to each and every natural lash. In my mind, I would get trained and instantly be the best. That was definitely not the case.
Thanks to loyal friends and co-workers who allowed me to use them as a model! Actually, I feel privileged they allowed me the opportunity to practice on them. Let’s be honest, you really have to trust or have faith in a person to allow them to “practice” on your eyes. After all, our eyesight is one of the most important senses.
Once I mastered Classic Lash Sets; I tried working on Volume. After my volume training, I practiced until I learned how to create the perfect fan using different volume lash techniques.
I quickly saw improvement in the quality of my work but also recognized areas of opportunity. I remember often apologizing to clients about taking so long and begin to challenge myself to complete a full set in less time. My next focus was to use the technique I learned to create MY signature look.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am one of DFW’s highly recommended Lash Stylist. Per clients, Custom Beauty Unleashed is known for it’s exquisite, elegant, and edgy lashing style. I strive to create a comfortable environment that will have clients looking forward to their next lash nap. I want all my clients to feel welcomed and relaxed.
My specialty and personal favorite is the “Hollywood Hybrid Set” which is the most requested. This set is a combination of classic and volume lashes using my personal technique for the client’s desired look.
I am proud of myself for not giving up when I didn’t have a consistent clientele. After being in the lash game for only one year and six months, I’m excited about future plans to take Custom Beauty Unleashed to the next level.
My ultimate goal is to create a brand that offers any and everything regarding beauty. I am currently enrolled in school for Esthetic and will offer Microblading services in a month.
In this industry, consistency is key! You MUST have patience, be a hard worker, and have dedication. I set aside practice time weekly to create new signature sets and master my craft. Also, I practice and learn about the latest techniques and research the best products to use. The end goal is not to have customers that I see occasionally BUT to build lasting relationships with clients.
In the near future, I plan to take Custom Beauty Unleashed to the next level. My ultimate goal is to create a brand that offers any and everything regarding beauty. I am currently enrolled in school for Esthetic and will offer Microblading services in a month.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I absolutely love the fact that Dallas is a very large city. This means no matter how many people who are doing the same thing, there are enough clients for EVERYONE!
I despise the fact most customers/clients want to make it a point to book with the “popular” people. Being a person who stays to self and is not always out on the scene; you have to work three times harder for clients.
