Meet R.J. Hinkle of R.J. Hinkle Photography in Coppell

Today we’d like to introduce you to R.J. Hinkle.

R.J., please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out as a yearbook photographer in my freshman year in high school, I went on to major in Photojournalism in college working for the University’s New & Publication bureau then the University Daily newspaper. My last 2 years in college and for the next few years, I worked as a photojournalist for several newspapers, wire services and freelancing for magazines and other publications.

The last 20 plus years, I’ve spent as a commercial photographer. I now specialize in lifestyle and food photography but venture into the editorial, corporate and product worlds as well.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As I’m sure, it is with many professions, I spend many years working long hours for little pay as worked my way into the industry. It was often a challenge to make ends meet and keep my equipment updated. I’ve been blessed to have always had a job in photography since college — but it’s taken a lot of hard work & dedication. Lots of ups, lots of down.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the R.J. Hinkle Photography, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a commercial & editorial photographer. I specialize in people and food photography. My clients are ad agencies, catalogs, and various businesses. I like to think what sets me apart is my dedication to and my relationships with my clients and the team I bring to the table. I have a fabulous crew — I might get credit for the photos, but they work just as hard and sometimes, harder than I to get the job done.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
What’s the expression? “I’d rather be lucky than good.”

I believe I’ve enjoyed some incredible luck over the years, but I also believe that we all have a hand in making or at least being prepared to take advantage of whatever luck comes our way.
