Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Davis.
Hi Rachel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
The true love of desserts started for me during high school. I got into making chocolate-covered strawberries for Valentine Day back in 2015. From there, “I got lost in the music”, previously to that I’d always enjoyed helping out with my church’s bake sales or licking the batter from the whisks after my mom finished whipping up a cake. In 2016 I graduated from high school, went to college for Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. Graduated in 2019 with a degree and certificate in both. However, even with a degree, I didn’t land where I had planned. After submitting 87 applications doing walk-in interviews, including in the town I grew up in. I spent some time cleaning houses, babysitting, washing hair at a nursing home, and baking just to earn some type of pay. Finally, I got hired. The next three years were spent as an assistant manager for a chain restaurant. I tried to bake as often as I could between the long work hours. I then quit, moved on to new employment, moved to a new town, and married the absolute love of my life. The last two years I’ve been trying to get out there and share my baked goods near and far.
Earlier this year, I threw in the towel. It seemed as if all the money, tears, love, and joy I had poured in was a complete waste. I took a step back and spoke with my mom and my husband. A newfound friend had me come sit in her living room, gave me baking supplies, and told me she’s investing in me. Giving up was not an option. Shortly after, I started signing up for vendor events and bought a second mixer. Because anything worth having doesn’t come easy. For the first time, I was quickly booked up! I set up at a huge two-day event “The Paris Balloon and Music Festival.” I told my sister I was so nervous! She made suggestions, sent me packaging supplies low, and behold, I sold out. Most importantly, I owe thanks and glory to God.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”!!!
Do not give up on your goals nor your dreams. Make them your reality. I’m a cottage baker. I’ve decided I want to become a cottage baker full-time. My favorite part of baking is the smiles on people’s faces when they eat my baked goods. I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my loved ones. My mom and sister created the foundation of determination on which I stand firmly on. I love you, Mom, Toto, Mom#2, Pops, and Hubby ❤️. When I make it, we all make it!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! My mom was a single mom doing the best she could for me! I remember when our deep freezer was pretty much bare. Somehow, she still managed to make a meal. We had no car for a long time, but she still managed to make sure I got to school! People that knew me drove past me while it was raining. I remember watching her sell all her jewelry to keep us afloat. Seeing my mom go through so much and still be standing today is where I got my work ethic and determination! You can’t sit and wait for things to fall in your lap; you gotta get out and grind! She instilled in me to work, don’t give up, and most importantly keep a relationship with God and always give him some of your time!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a cottage baker! I bake breads, brownies, cupcakes, etc, specializing in tasty treats. I am known for my cakes! They seem to leave people wanting another bite! I am most proud of the support my loved ones give as well as the smiles when handing a dessert off to a customer. I believe what sets me apart is the creativity and the texture of my desserts. I’m always coming up with something new!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the diversity! There’s something for everyone! I wouldn’t say there’s really anything I dislike.
