Meet Rachel Fox Poteet and Alex Fox of The Refuge Meditation in Exposition Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Fox Poteet and Alex Fox.

Rachel and Alex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our story began a long time ago. We are siblings, and have been on this journey together since the very beginning!

The Refuge really began in December of 2017, when we took a full moon trip from Los Angeles back to Dallas, to relocate Rachel from Venice, where she had been living and guiding meditation.

Upon our arrival, we realized that Dallas had a lot of phenomenal vinyasa yoga, but lacked regular meditation offerings at local studios!

In May of 2018, one evening, we came up with the name and logo of The Refuge together, started a website and an Instagram, and the rest followed quickly from there. We began to presell memberships to help us gather the funds we needed to start the studio.

Our doors opened in July of 2018, with multiple lifetime members and our parents’ support. The first few months were a real learning experience, and we have been growing into ourselves ever since.

We now have a thriving community around the studio, and all of us consider this place to be our Refuge.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nobody becomes an entrepreneur expecting a smooth road! We have definitely had our set of obstacles to overcome and kinks to work out.

Both of us put our whole lives into this place, working seven days a week for the first year, and selling most of our possessions to invest in the studio. The Refuge is definitely a start-up!

For example, before getting an office down the hall from the studio, we used to camp out all day in the hallway, trying to get work done on the floor.

Also, every October, we have the unique pleasure of sharing our block with the millions of visitors that come to attend the Texas State Fair! Somehow, our students still manage to make it most days, but it’s always an adventure.

We are always expecting the unexpected, but we look forward to it, knowing we have such a supportive community behind us.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Refuge Meditation – what should we know?
The Refuge is a therapeutic yoga and meditation studio, first and foremost. It is a place for people to feel better.

Our incredible community is perhaps what separates us from other fitness and yoga spaces – our core of members and instructors are so personally involved and supportive of us and each other!

When we opened, we knew we were going to be the only meditation-focused studio in the city, and we would have the unique opportunity to partner with many other businesses. We are proud to foster collaboration where competition usually exists.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The Refuge is a true partnership.

We are both in the studio every day, personally managing every aspect of the experience.

We want clients to arrive in and float away – we take care of everything for you, from the set up of props and mats to the cleanup and maintenance of the space itself.

We want you to take your zen home or back to work with you. Come as you are, leave feeling better!
