Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Friedman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My role as the artist behind Rachel Friedman Photography evolved from my role as a new mother. As someone who relies on the hundreds of photographs my mom carefully organized into albums to preserve my childhood memories – I have a notoriously bad long-term memory – I knew that when I became a mother myself, I would dedicate myself to being our family documentarian. I understood how fleeting my kid’s young years would be, and I wanted to capture every moment.
So in 2012, I upgraded my camera and spent the following few years not only capturing my kiddos but rediscovering my love of photography through classes in person and online and a ton of practice. Soon my friends, seeing my work, asked me to photograph their children, and in 2015, Rachel Friedman Photography was born.
Over the past four years, I’ve nurtured my business as I would a young child, from its infancy through the years of major growth. This summer, my family relocated to the DFW Metroplex where I am reestablishing my business in Plano where I am serving families who value not only beautiful photography but preserving their family’s story through archival-grade artwork for their walls and heirloom albums that will last for generations.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Over the past four years, I have nurtured this business and grown from a small “side hustle” while I was home raising my babies, selling just digital images, to a true portrait studio that serves my clients with the utmost care to be sure that I am meeting all of their needs. Now Rachel Friedman Photography does it all, from session preparation and styling to offering an extensive studio wardrobe available for client use. I work with my clients to plan a custom portrait session that fits their vision and follow-through after the session to help clients find the best ways to display and treasure these moments and memories. Amazingly, so many of my clients have stuck with me as my business model has evolved because they love how I engage with their children and the gorgeous results they can treasure from their session.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My business, Rachel Friedman Photography, specializes in newborn, family and maternity photography for families in Dallas, Plano and across the DFW area.
I take pride in three key things that I believe set me apart as a photographer:
1) As a mom, I know how stressful the process can be, from scheduling to figuring out what to wear to getting the kids there on time and hoping they “cooperate”. Because I’ve been in your shoes, I do my best as a photographer to serve my clients at every step of the way, with constant communication, wardrobe prep either utilizing my studio wardrobe or with my online styling service, and full-service design guidance after the session to designing and framing fine art prints for gallery walls, create custom heirloom albums, hanging portraits on the walls and more.
2) My sessions are relaxed and fun for families – I offer a hybrid of posed and candid images in my sessions, so your session will be a mix of brief moments of looking and smiling at the camera mixed in with a lot of time for snuggles, play, and natural interaction. I let kids be kids, bringing out their real smiles when they are having fun. Most families leave my sessions with their kids asking when they’ll get to play with Miss Rachel again. Even dads like photo sessions with RFP!
3) My style is natural and organic, so I will work with your family for newborn and family photos to be sure that it’s your gorgeous faces that are in the limelight. Newborn sessions are photographed primarily on white and black backdrops and with minimal props so that your baby’s little details are the focus. Family sessions are photographed in carefully chosen locations and utilizing neutral wardrobe options so that the primary focus is your family and your love for one another.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think that starting and growing a business is a true hybrid of luck and hard work.
