Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Linger.
Rachel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always loved decorating my room and rearranging the furniture in the living room growing up. Drawing floor plans and bedrooms was another hobby that occupied my time as a child. My mom noticed these things which led her to encourage me to pursue interior design. It’s something I had never thought was an actual career until she mentioned it to me. In high school, I had the opportunity to take some extra classes on it which finalized my decision to pursue Interior design as a career.
My senior year I was taking a speech business course in which I was able to share my love for decorating and design. My teacher just happened to be the manager at Recreational Resort Cottages and was in need of a decorator. The following week after my speech she reached out to me offering me a job in staging the model homes on display. I took the job and started working part-time. I started out just using décor they had already stored from staging previous homes. the larger we grew, the more décor I needed to fill our new models.
I then went from just decorating to also shopping for new themes in which to fill the houses. Here and there I’ve also helped pick the design and finishes for some of our models, such as paint colors, flooring, countertops, etc.. After high school I went to cosmetology school so I could have a job to support myself through college. Once I got my cosmetology license I went on to start interior design school. The whole time I was going through both schools I continued to decorate part-time as our company began to grow.
School helped me realize that I had a bigger love for decorating than actual design, so I quit school in order to work more, in both decorating and with hair. At Recreational Resort Cottages we have gone from about fifteen models to now almost fifty, ranging from tiny homes to larger multi-sections. Because of this opportunity I’ve been able to grow with this company and learn what I’m capable of as an artist. I’m now helping with the social media side of everything to make sure our models look good for marketing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a pretty smooth ride which is a blessing. The only real obstacle I faced was making the decision to quit interior design school in order to pursue this job. I never really saw myself doing anything other than what I’m doing now, but I did want to have a degree. It just made more sense to take advantage of my career growth rather than a degree I would probably not use. My decision has proved itself to be the right one. I love what I do and cannot wait to keep growing with this company.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Recreational Resort Cottages – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our company specializes in offering very nice modular homes, ranging from 200 square feet to 2100 square feet. Right now we are best known for our RV Park Models which nowadays people know them as tiny homes. We carry homes from several different manufacturers to try and accommodate everyone. What sets us apart from others is the quality of the homes we offer and the fact that we have so many different options. Our staff is pretty great too! We try to make everyone feel as at home as possible and we strive to make the buying process smooth sailing.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We have just recently launched our YouTube channel where we give tours of some of our houses. This is something that has already gotten bigger faster than we expected. We’re hoping to get better with this and our other social media sites in order to be as informative as we can to anyone and everyone looking for a new kind of housing. As for me, I’m always ready for new ways to grow my creativity and this company has really given me that. They have entrusted me with more and more since I first started working here so there’s no telling what could come next!
