Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Terrana and Amy Weir.
Rachel and Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Amy: I took my first class in the LA area in the summer of 2012. I was there for a few weeks over the summer while my son was in a summer school program, and needed something to do! I loved the class, and right away knew it was something that I wanted to keep doing on a regular basis. There wasn’t anything like it in my hometown of Flower Mound, TX, so after careful thought and consideration, I decided to leave my teaching job after 11 years, and embark on the journey of becoming a Pure Barre Franchisee. I was also planning my wedding, so I continued to take classes in a DFW area studio once I got back from LA.
I opened the Flower Mound studio, only the 5th in the DFW area, on Jan. 7, 2014.
Rachel: I started taking Pure Barre classes in February 2012. I was driving past a studio, and recognized the word “barre.” I went the next morning and purchased an initial month. After my first class, I knew it wasn’t only something I wanted to continue as a client, but knew immediately that I wanted to become a Pure Barre teacher. A year and a half later, I heard about a studio opening in Flower Mound, TX. I reached out to Amy via email and asked if I could come to her audition to be one of her original teachers. I went to the audition, along with about 20 other people, and found out later that evening that I had gotten the job! I was finally going to be a Pure Barre teacher!
Amy: I had an instant rapport with Rachel, but I had no idea we would be where we are today! Just three months after the Flower Mound studio opened, I made Rachel my lead teacher. She was my right-hand man, and worked with all of the other teachers and took care of things “inside the double doors” of the studio.
Rachel: I LOVED being Amy’s lead teacher. She has an amazing work ethic, and we made a great team. As our friendship grew stronger, so did our strength as a partnership.
Amy: I always knew that I wanted to open another studio. After Flower Mound had been opened about a year and a half, I approached Rachel about opening one in her hometown of Colleyville. I asked how she wanted to be involved, if at all. I knew we would make an amazing team!
Rachel: I knew that Amy and I would make great partners. I wanted to be a part of growing the Pure Barre brand in the DFW area, and opening one in my hometown was the perfect solution!
We opened Pure Barre Colleyville on Oct. 15, 2015.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Amy: We have been so fortunate that our business has been growing and profitable from day one. We have an amazing team of teachers, most of whom have been with us since opening day. We couldn’t do what we do without them! We have amazing and loyal clients, and we are growing our business every month. There are always growing pains, but for the most part, the road has been pretty smooth!
Rachel; I relied so much on Amy and her experience while opening the studio. I couldn’t have done it without her! I worked mostly at the studio and was still teaching, while Amy did most of the behind the scenes of the business. It wasn’t always easy, and of course, there are bumpy times. But we have always been able to separate our partnership from our friendship and can switch those hats without any problem. I think that’s what makes us a great team. We always know which “hat” we have on, and are able to work through anything together.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pure Barre Colleyville – what should we know?
Amy: Pure Barre is the oldest and the biggest of barre fitness concepts. Our founder started the business in 2003, and it has grown to over 500 studios across the nation and Canada. We specialize in one on one attention in a boutique fitness environment, giving a total body workout that is perfect for all ages and levels of fitness.
Rachel: We use the ballet barre for stability and resistance. Pure Barre uses small isometric movements using your own body weight (sometimes with some additional equipment like a tube or small ball). We take your muscles to total fatigue and then stretch them out, creating long, lean muscles without the bulk.
Amy: We have 3 different class types for all fitness needs under one roof! Pure Barre Classic is the foundation of our brand, and what we are most known for. Pure Empower is our cardio class that uses a steel platform and weights around your wrists and ankles to really get your heart rate up and make you sweat! Our newest class is called Pure Reform and uses special resistance bands and sliders under your feet with slow and controlled movements. The combination of the 3 classes is what makes Pure Barre perfect for everyone!
Rachel: The classes are set to fun, current music, and are very musically driven. We work to the music, and it really drives you to dig deep! The classes are 50 minutes long and are all about you. No distractions. Just you, the music, and the teacher pushing you to be your best self.
Amy: Our teachers are all specifically trained in this technique, and walk around the entire class helping everyone achieve perfect form. There are no levels to the classes, but all of them can be modified or intensified with the help and encouragement of the teacher. The classes are perfect for anyone… even pregnant or postpartum moms, those with injuries, or in recovery. The classes are high intensity but zero impact.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Amy: I am a planner by nature, and I think that a well thought out business plan and an organized and well-run business is essential to the studio’s success. Rachel and I work very hard at making sure there are no stones unturned, and that our staff and teachers know exactly what is expected of them to make our clients the sole focus. It is all about communication. I always say “the devil is in the details”!
Rachel: I think a lot of it is the client relationships. We work on making sure that each of our clients feels like they are coming “home” each time they come to the studio. We have built an amazing community, and have loved seeing friendships form and develop between our clients. This is a judgment-free zone. We want to be the place that our clients come to feel supported and encouraged by us, our staff, and each other.
