Meet Rachel Voss of Voss Salon in Knox and Henderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Voss.

Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always the “creative one” of my friends and family. The one who would do everyone’s hair and makeup for prom and then rush to do my own as my date was walking in the door. I can’t help but want to help people look and feel their best! I started as a stylist and knew my dream was to one day have my own salon. I worked as an instructor for Aveda, then as a stylist for a salon in Uptown Dallas and then moved to the salon I now own (Salon 5014). I have really enjoyed helping stylists grow while focusing on our education, which has allowed the stylists to be successful and give our clients the most up to date trends. I opened my second salon, Voss Salon, in April, and it has doubled the fun! With two salons in such great locations, things are moving at a fast pace, and I could not be in a better city for fashion and beauty!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were definitely challenges! First of all, my family insisted I get a college degree and try something more traditional, so I had to first prove them wrong! As far as the business goes, going from being a stylist behind the chair where you can go home at night and not have to worry about anything until the next day, to owning the business and all that is involved with the back office affairs, stylists, clients, management, which can be around the clock, has been an adjustment- one that I am loving having the pleasure of learning.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a high-end salon and we cater to high end clients. I specialize in haircutting. I’m known for giving clients thorough consultations focused on their lifestyle, hair texture, and desired maintenance. I love making people look great without having to get a blowout every week to achieve the desired look! As a company, I am most proud of our commitment to teamwork and lifting each other up. This isn’t the type of salon you need to be nervous to come into. We know we’re good at what we do, and we don’t pretend to have huge egos to prove it. Our actions (and Instagram @vosssalondallas lol) speak for us!

What were you like growing up?
I’ll admit it- I was the wild child. I am the second oldest of 4, and I was my parent’s “challenge”. I had more fun socializing and testing the waters than I like to admit. I was always asking my mom to cut me some bangs, or to color my hair. She let me use her copper shampoo (she’s a redhead and I was white blonde) when I was 12, so I had pink hair for the summer and loved every second of it. My Grandma Betty had a little salon in her house, and all the ladies in town would come and get their hair done on Saturday’s when we would visit her. Sitting in the salon chairs next to the ladies getting their perms, I would talk to them and ask them questions about their lives- I couldn’t believe this was my grandma’s JOB! It was SO fun! That’s when I knew I was going to be a hairstylist.
